Everyone wants a dog who walks nicely on leash... but not everyone is willing to put in the effort to teach it.

The truth is, loose leash walking isn’t magic — it’s a skill your dog learns through clear communication and consistency. With some focused effort, you can see amazing progress in just a few weeks!

When I started working with Teddy (a 10‑month‑old Australian Shepherd), he struggled to stay close without pulling. In this video, you’ll see part of one of our training sessions where he’s walking 35 steps between treats — and by the end of the week, he was cruising along for over 100 steps on a loose leash! 🐾

Here are a few simple ways to start improving your own dog’s leash manners:

🎯 Reward proximity: Every time your dog is at your side, mark and reward. Make it clear that this is where the good stuff happens.
🪜 Raise the bar gradually: Once they understand, start waiting for one step… then two… then five… before rewarding.
🚗 Set them up for success: Begin on pavement — a quiet parking lot or a calm road — instead of sidewalks lined with grass and distractions.

It takes intentional practice, but if you stick with it, your dog can become that calm, connected walking partner you’ve always pictured.

Tonight we had the pleasure of hosting a litter of service dog 🐕‍🦺 puppies from at our training facility. It was great exposure and socialization for the pups and fun for us to get to play with them and breathe in that delicious puppy breath. 😍

Imagine calling your dog and they come flying back to you—every single time. No stress. No chasing. No panic. Just trust.

That’s the power of a rock-solid recall—and it’s exactly what we’re building in our Total Recall Class starting April 1st.

Whether your dog ignores you at the park, gets “selective hearing,” or just isn’t reliable off-leash yet, this class will transform the way they respond to you.

✨ What you’ll get:
✔️ A dog who wants to come back to you
✔️ Reliable recall—even around distractions
✔️ More freedom for your dog (and peace of mind for you)
✔️ A stronger bond built on trust and clarity

A solid recall is about more than obedience—it’s about confidence, safety, and the joy of taking your dog off leash and knowing they'll come back!

📅 Starts April 1st
📍 Only a few spots left!

🐾 Calling all volunteers!
Curious about agility? Capital Comets Dog Sports Club is looking for volunteers to help make the BC/Yukon Regional Championships run smoothly. This is a great chance to learn more about the sport and watch some of the region’s top dog/handler teams in action.

Interested? Contact the club directly for more information!

********
The BC/Yukon Regional Agility Championships is being held at the Saanich Fairgrounds from June 12-14th.

This is a fairly major undertaking by our local Capital Comets Dog Sports Club and we are in need of many volunteers for many different roles over the course of the long weekend. Competitors come in from all over BC and the Yukon to compete and qualify for Nationals. We even have two of our local Club members that have qualified for Worlds and are off to Spain in April to compete with their dogs. I think last year there were over 500 competitors with dogs of all shapes and sizes competing in the BC/Yukon Regionals held in Langley at Thunderbird Equestrian Park.

The volunteer opportunities are split into morning and afternoon shifts over the course of the three days and would include things like:

👉Manning the volunteer tent and ensuring food and beverages are available to all volunteers over the course of the weekend;
👉Check-in tent for competitors and volunteers;
👉Possibly helping with scoring, running score sheets from the rings to the central data area and organizing daily ribbons and prizes;
👉In the ring, bar setting for a front row seat to the action with no prior experience necessary;
👉In the ring, timing (training available);
👉In the ring, scribing (training available but you can’t watch the pretty dog, only the judge);
👉Running refreshments for judges out to the rings and restocking coolers at ringside;
👉Security, parking, grounds crew, etc.

Check out the Regionals website. We also have a FB page for more information and updates on Regionals.

We are looking for volunteers for all sorts of roles and would attempt to match folks to their area of interest or, strength. All volunteers get a free t-shirt, free lunch and more!

One of my favourite client dogs passed away recently at the much-too-young age of 6. I'm sharing this blog post I wrote a number of years ago as a tribute to him and all the other dogs we've loved and lost.

Cooper was a bright spirit and such a joy to work with and be around. He was also the best kisser! He had the softest tongue and was always so gentle with it when he showered you with his love. He filled my heart with happy every time I got to see him.

We all know how hard it is to lose our dogs, but it’s even harder when they’re taken away from us at such a young age. Love yours just a little extra today.

Because Of A Dog

My first dog was a black and white Springer Spaniel. A very regal and handsome looking boy who was more like a stately gentleman than a dog.

When he and I were out together, people used to come up to me all the time telling me how they used to have a Springer, too. They’d tell me stories about their dogs and how much they loved them as they’d fawn all over my handsome guy.

It used to get tiresome for me. I’d hear someone say “Oh, I used to have a black and white Springer!” and I’d think “I know, I’ve heard this story, like, five hundred times before.” I became bored and impatient with it after a while.

But then my Springer died. And his death and absence left a huge vacant space where he used to reside in my heart.

All of a sudden, I became one of those people who approached others on the street when they were walking with their Springer Spaniels, especially the black and white ones. I turned into the one now saying “I used to have a Springer, too!”, telling them all about him and what a great guy he was as I fawned all over their handsome dog.

And that sacred place in my heart that I’ve held him in for all these years bursts wide open just for a moment. And I feel grateful for the opportunity to feel him there again, even though he’s been gone for many years now.

It took me a long time to get it, but I finally understood.

I understood why it was so important for all of those people to share their stories about their own dogs with me. I understood how important it really was to them to share that time with my dog and what that meant to them to feel, just for a moment, the love they once had for their own dog reflected back to them in my own. I’ve been humbled by the moments of grace and joy that were provided to all of those people without even knowing what was happening.

And I understand now when people approach me to pet my dogs and share stories about theirs, that something more magical and healing then I realize may be happening and I give them the time and space to have that moment.

Such a simple gift.

And all because of a dog.
