Xylitol, an increasing ingredient in sugar-free products, is very toxic to dogs and cats. Can be lethal within 30 minutes. Xylitol is also listed in ingredient as: Birch Sugar (most common); Birch Bark Extract; Wood Sugar; E967 (European food additive number); Xylite; Meso-xylitol; Sucre de Bouleau (French for birch sugar), and Anhydroxylitol so we all need to be very cautious to what our 4-legged family members consume.

Too many times VIK9 has been approached in this scenario. I have advocated this so many times. Service Dogs MUST be an added tool not the only tool. Professional Mental Health Support and meds should be part of the support mechanisms until they are deemed bot required further and then eased off them. Service Dogs are great tools but if looked to be the only will put great risk to the health and well being of the dog.

A new article sharing Critical Incident and Trauma (CIT) Support Dog Diesel’s story, why he has had to be retired as a PTSD Service Dog and what we are trying to do for Diesel. Unfortunately this article mentions that adoption is an option which it is not. VIK9 AHSS cannot afford to absorb the costs expended on him to this point and we would prefer to place him in a safe place where he can help people. We are including training of 3 Detachment Staff to be Support Dog Handlers as it is very different than that of Police K9 Handlers. The article was published by BlackPress in the Victoria area. VIK9 AHSS has training availability spots open for our Service Dog programs. Any interested party is encouraged to inquire with our President/Lead Trainer ([email protected]) as to which program may be best for you.

We currently conduct training sessions 3 times per week (Monday mornings, Wednesday mornings and Friday afternoons) to support our current clients/teams. If demand increases, we can open up Tuesdays and/or Thursdays again.

We train at various public locations to help each client in developing best strategies for their condition(s), to best train their service dog and develop the team.

CIT Support Dogs Groot, Diesel and Jack are wearing Royal Canadian Legion authorized Poppy Patches, available at Saanich Penninsula Legion Poppy Office in Sidney. These patches were primarily meant for members of the 443 squadron as the normal poppy provided hoses significant hazard to our aircrafts.

Groot, Jack and now Diesel are retired psychriatric service doggs now retasked as specifically trained trauma support dogs, providing services to the greater Victoria area.

Congrats to our new Owner Trainer Team, Phoenix and her handler. They just passed their Level 2/Public Access Test (PAT) and have formally commenced our program. Welcome!
