Christmas morning started slowly …REALLY slowly, and quietly …until it wasn’t. 😑😆 Merry Christmas from Lexi and Skye! 🐕🐕

Early morning private park fun! We saw the beautiful sun rise. Both Lexi and Skye have had their tummy shaved for that ultrasound we did a few days ago. It didn’t stop Skye from playing with her favorite soccer ball while Lexi investigated the new grass! 🐕🐕

We are back to Calgary. Skye and Lexi both have a stomach ultrasound in a couple of days. Lexi just had her heart ultrasound last week and so she’ll be more relaxed, but Skye has never had an ultrasound while awake.
…Yep, both will be awake for that ultrasound, which is why I chose that hospital.

I’ve worked with Skye on cooperative care since she was a puppy, for pretty much everything …but she needed a refresher. So first, we worked on “side” when down, then stay/relax, with her head down…and she’s to lift her hind leg to show me her tummy when I ask. If she doesn’t, I stop and wait for her to be ready. I use mostly tiny treats and a clicker. I cut the sound so you can concentrate on her body language instead of my voice. 😄
The video is showing our progress (we started this morning). I use a small 2-pound weight to mimic the ultrasound tool, and then a small electric razor for when they’ll shave her tummy. The entire session is short. Again, I stop if she resists. I pet her if I need to help her relax. It’s hard for a dog to expose their tummy, but so far, Skye is doing well.
Of course, the main goal is for her to remain calm. It is very different when it’s happening at the vet’s, and on their table. Here, at home, I am starting at ground level and will move to a table next.
I plan on doing one or two sessions throughout the day, today and more tomorrow, and then that’s it! The real deal will take place in a couple of days. 🐕🐕😊

Took Skye for a long walk mainly to refresh her memory on her off-leash “check-ins” and her “leave it” when seeing another dog we don’t know. She absolutely loves little dogs but not all little dogs want to play silly with her! 😆.
She is heavily rewarded at first for every single success, and then rewarded intermittently. She rocked it. This training falls under our “safety” training. She’s not confident around bigger dogs and so I taught her to go to “bridge” (under my legs) to wait it out if something is uncomfortable to her, or to come back to me on a side opposite to the oncoming larger dog. Everything is kept light and fun. She’s been doing so much better as you’ll see in the video where she suddenly meets a tall white (very sweet) poodle.
As we continue our training, rewards will be spaced out, or will be switched to another type of reward she likes (she thoroughly enjoys having her bum scratched, so that’s an option 😂). I refrain from taking a ball or a tug toy because I have no room in my pockets, and because of how slippery the ground is there.
Note that this is a place where you might meet people on horses, so I like to keep Skye fairly close to me.
