What is this? Kissing Spine!

This is a radiograph of a horse's back where the saddle sits.
These are the dorsal spinous processes (DSP) of the horse's back (thoracic) vertebrae.
There is impingement (closeness) of multiple DSPs with bony changes (brighter white areas where the DSP are touching called sclerosis, and loss of bone density - holes).
This horse has "Kissing spine", a painful back condition which can cause behaviour changes under saddle such as irritability, bucking and reluctance to work.

Note - Not all horses with back pain have radiographic changes and not all horses with changes on radiographs have discomfort or pain. It is important to have your veterinarian perform a thorough exam including radiographs if kissing spine is suspected.
Call for an appointment if you have any concerns

Diet is a crucial element of your horse's overall health, impacting the risk of dysbiosis, gastric ulceration, leaky gut syndrome, colic, and laminitis, among other issues.

Here is a quick four-step assessment to evaluate your horse's diet:

1. Assess Body Condition: Determine if your horse is overweight, underweight, or at an ideal weight. Note whether they are currently gaining, losing, or maintaining that weight.
2. Assess Workload and Life Stage: Consider their activity level (e.g., actively competing vs. not working) and life stage (e.g., broodmare, growing horse, or senior).
3. Assess Forage and Grain: Ensure your horse is eating enough forage (ideally 2% of their body weight, and at least 1.5%). Confirm the type and quality of hay is appropriate for their needs—lower quality for "easy keepers" and prime quality for "poor doers." Finally, evaluate if your horse requires grain based on his weight and work load, and, if so, how much they are receiving.
4. Assess Supplements: Verify if your horse is receiving a vitamin-mineral supplement or balancer pellet at the correct feeding rate. Review any other supplements currently being fed to determine if they are necessary and appropriate.

If you need assistance with any of these steps, please call the office to book a nutritional consultation 604-888-0087

Are you looking to keep your equine athlete performing at its best this show season?

Acupuncture is a natural and effective way to support performance horses by reducing pain, relieving muscle tension and stiffness (especially in the back and neck), and improving overall mobility. It also supports immune function, aids digestion, and balances stress, making it a valuable tool for both peak performance and recovery.

Regular sessions can:
• Keep your horse loose, comfortable, and competition-ready.
• Support recovery and reduce soreness after training or showing.
• Encourage calmness and reduce anxiety before high-pressure events.
• Help prevent injuries.

For best results, we recommend booking a session a few days before your event to ensure your horse feels balanced and ready. Alternatively, scheduling a session during a show after your horse has finished for the day can aid recovery and maintain comfort throughout the competition.

Give your horse the advantage of feeling and moving their best all season long. Please contact the office to inquire about the acupuncture show special!

One final look at PPEs and why we do them:

A PPE Helps Match the Horse to the Job 🎯
Not every horse needs to be perfect — they just need to be appropriate for the job.
For example:
• A horse suitable for trail riding may not hold up to high-level jumping
• A horse with mild arthritis may still do well in lower-level work
A PPE helps determine if the horse is likely to stay comfortable doing what you plan to do with them.
The key question isn’t “Is this horse perfect?”
It’s “Is this horse suitable for my goals?”

A PPE Can Save You Money 💰
While a PPE has a cost, it can prevent much larger expenses later.
It may identify:
• Chronic lameness issues
• Old tendon or ligament injuries
• Joint disease
• Hidden medical concerns
This information allows buyers to:
• Decide whether to proceed
• Plan future veterinary care
In many cases, a PPE can save buyers thousands of dollars and significant heartache.

One final note:
Try To Use An Independent Veterinarian 🩺
One of the most important rules of a Pre-Purchase Exam:
The vet performing the exam should work for the buyer — not the seller.
An independent veterinarian ensures:
• An unbiased evaluation
• Transparent results
• Clear communication about risks
Your veterinarian’s role is to help you make the most informed decision possible.
