Knowing your horse's TPR (Temperature, Pulse and Respiration) is crucial for assessing their overall health and detecting potential problems early. It gives you a baseline for your horse - like people, some run hotter or cooler than "normal" - so if their normal is "off" it can be an indication something is wrong. A change in temperature can signal an infection or inflammation. Abnormal respiration can indicate pain or stress.
Regularly monitoring your horse's TPR gives you an essential comparison if you suspect your horse is unwell. Knowing what's normal for your horse helps you quickly recognize when something is off.
And your veterinarian will appreciate the added information when responding to a call.

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO TELL IF YOUR HORSE IS IN DISTRESS?

As a horse owner, it's imperative you know how to recognize problems and respond promptly. It's important to know what conditions require veterinary attention, and how to take appropriate action while you're waiting for the veterinarian's arrival.

Types of emergencies you and your horse may encounter on your journey together include colic; lacerations and bleeding wounds; impaled objects or nails in the foot; acute lameness due to conditions ranging from hoof abscess to fractures, laminitis, tendon injuries and more; eye injuries; allergic reactions; choke; and even foaling emergencies.

No matter what you may face in the future, getting to know your horse's normal vital signs (including temperature, pulse and respiration) as well as its normal behavior patterns will help you become a good observer, so that you readily recognize signs of ill health. Being prepared is in your horse's best interest.

Always remember, your veterinarian is one of your best resources. Talk to them about how they can be reached after-hours, and about recommendations for an emergency plan suitable for your individual situation.

We are expecting a heat wave in the Lower Mainland - so we thought it was a good time to remind everyone how quickly your horse can overheat.
*Fun Fact: a recent study determined the method that results in the quickest return to normal body temperature is cold hosing a stationary horse (2 minutes). Walking alone took the longest time for recovery (25 minutes).
(thx for the study info)
As always - if you have questions call the team at WEVS.

When something is wrong with your horse - your stress level rises and it feels like an emergency - but not every equine emergency needs immediate attention.
Check out this veterinarian-recommended guide to better understand (and be less stressed in the moment) what is an urgent emergency, same-day emergency, or non-emergency.
Always remember, if you are unsure if something constitutes as an emergency, call your veterinarian to determine the best course of action.
Also know your veterinarian's after-hours policies and availability for responding to emergency calls.

Have you dropped off a f***l sample yet?
All we need is 1-2 f***l balls in a small container or ziplock -(*keep in fridge if not able to drop same day) and we can get your horse on the right deworming protocol.
Get your f***l egg count in April and October and WEVS will give special discounts on dewormers.
This diagram shows how easy it is for your horse to pick up and shed larvae.

WEVS thinks maintaining good control over internal parasites is important so we have instituted a semi-annual f***l testing time to help you develop a great internal parasite control program.

For the months of April and October, WEVS will be offering special discounts on f***l egg counts - a great tool to evaluate your horse's internal parasite health and we will also give special discounts on dewormers. The f***l egg count will also help you develop an individualized parasite control plan for your horse.

FUN F***L FACTS:
-Internal parasites can cause significant effects on your horses health. Weight loss, anemia, colic, poor hair coat can all be due to parasites.
- Most internal parasites are transferred when one horse passes manure with parasites in it and another horse eats in that area picking up the parasite.
- Spring deworming before your horses are using communal pastures can significantly decrease the transfer of these parasites.
- Horses can be characterized as high shedders and low shedders, this can help you minimize parasite transfer and tailor the deworming plan to your individual horse which may mean you can actually deworm less!!
*1-2 f***l balls in a small container or ziplock - keep in fridge if not able to drop same day.
