When Dr. Nick Kleider retired in September 2022, Dr. Sarah, three equine veterinary assistants and the office manager joined another equine practice and now our journey takes a new path.

Since 2004, our veterinarians have prioritized the interests and needs of our clients and patients first.

As we approach our 20th anniversary year, our success has grown to the extent that a bold step forward is required.

Formerly Agwest Equine Veterinary Services, we are pleased to introduce our new practice focused exclusively towards the health and performance of horses:

Horizon Equine Veterinary Clinic Ltd.

Rest assured; we remain the same dedicated team of equine professionals:

Dr. Steve Chiasson
Dr. Sarah Squinas
Dr. Lauren Jeffery
Dr. Jane Westendorf

Horizon Equine vets are available for in-hospital medical and surgical care, on farm veterinary care, and for emergency services that cater to every aspect of your horse’s health.

Our team is experienced in treating various horse breeds and disciplines, spanning the worlds of performance and pleasure. We are ready to help when your horse needs us most.

Our clinic continues to thrive at its longstanding location in Abbotsford while serving clients across the Fraser Valley, and the greater lower mainland, including Squamish, the Sunshine Coast and Bowen Island.

Our phone number remains unchanged, ensuring seamless continuity of care.

After 44 years in equine practice, Dr. Kleider is retiring. As of today, Friday, August 26th, 2022, he will no longer be seeing patients. Dr. Sarah Squinas, who has been a mainstay for Kleider Veterinary Services, will continue to care for you and your horses. Kleider Veterinary Services has amalgamated with Agwest Veterinary Group. Dr. Steve Chiasson and Dr. Lauren Jeffery will be joining Dr. Sarah, our office manager Erin, our receptionist Shannon, and our veterinary assistants Leila, Laura, and Adele, in ensuring that there is no disruption in your horse’s care. The phone number you are used to calling will remain the same to allow for an easy transition and continuous communication. You can also call Agwest directly at 604-826-5089. It has been a pleasure looking after your veterinary needs and we are grateful for the opportunity to do so. Please do not hesitate to call if you have any questions or concerns.

This past week has been one of great sadness for everyone here at the clinic. Tina Goodwin, who has been a committed and integral part of Kleider vet Services for several decades, lost her daughter in a riding accident. Annie Goodwin lost her life last Wednesday while schooling her advanced horse Bruno. A tragedy of such magnitude makes one speechless. Life crashes to a halt for a parent who loses their child. Annie’s international equestrian goals and achievements include galloping around Rolex with such skill that she made it look like a walk in the park. For many of us, it was always refreshing to walk into the clinic and have Tina share her latest pictures or movies and proudly mention Annie’s latest accomplishments. Rest in peace Annie Goodwin - You died doing what you love but you left the world far, far too early. Tina, your Canadian family is here to help and support you upon your return.

We would like to introduce Erin Barnes to everyone!

Erin will be taking over the role of Office Manager at Kleider Vet Services as Beth will be transitioning to a relief position so she can enjoy staying at home with her son.

Erin has been an avid horse owner and successful competition rider for over 20 years. She has competed with many horses in the hunters and jumpers and currently leases a horse in Langley.

Professionally, Erin worked as a Legal Administrative Assistant and jumped at the opportunity to combine both her worlds and manage an equine vet clinic.

Welcome to the team, Erin!

To our clients and patients, past, present and future:

During this unsettling time in the world we wanted to reassure you that veterinarians have been deemed an essential service and Kleider Veterinary Services is here for you and your horse(s).

We have implemented social distancing measures into our daily appointments to ensure your safety and the safety of our veterinarians and staff. We advocate limiting persons at each appointment. When possible the veterinary team can work with your horse and stay in communication with you via text, telephone, FaceTime or Zoom. Telemedicine consultations are available by making an appointment with our office and providing pictures, videos and/or using facetime, zoom or text messaging.

Kleider Veterinary Services continues to be at the forefront of equine medicine and rehabilitation in 2020. We are all thrilled with our new associate Dr. Sarah Squinas (Dr. Sarah) who joined the practice in November. Sarah graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 2012. Her veterinary career began at Clover Valley Veterinary Hospital, an equine general practice and referral hospital. In addition to practicing general medicine, Dr. Squinas developed skills in colic surgery, neonatal medicine, and intensive care. Dr. Squinas has also worked in small animal companion medicine.

Dr. Squinas is passionate about education and sharing her knowledge. She developed curriculum and was an instructor for the Veterinary Assistant Program at the University of the Fraser Valley. She is a published author and her case report, “An unusual case of urinary retention and ulcerative cystitis in a horse, sequelae of pelvic abscessation, and adhesion's.” can be found in the Canadian Veterinary Journal July 2013. Dr. Squinas is a member of the Delta Equine Seminar Committee responsible for organizing a local, annual continuing education meeting for equine veterinarians.

We are very pleased that Dr Sarah's experience in colic management will augment our hospital care for horses. Our large stalls have been renovated and adding radiant heaters and a camera monitoring system.

Dr. Hodge left Kleider Veterinary Services in March and we hope that this will not create further anxiety for any of you during this already challenging time. We want to reassure everyone of our continued commitment to you and your horses.

March has been an eventful month to say the least! Dr. Kleider underwent surgery but is very grateful his procedure was a success and he has completely recovered. He is returning to work on Monday April 7th. His truck is loaded and he is looking forward to seeing you at your barn or here at the clinic to address any of your needs.

Here’s to all of us staying safe and healthy in 2020!

The KVS Team; Doc Nick & Doc Sarah,
Tina - inventory manager
Leila - veterinary assistant
Beth, office manager

Dr Kleider update 😊

Back to work soon! I had a pacemaker put in last week and I wanted to sincerely thank everyone for wishing me a speedy recovery. 💛 Dr Sarah Squinus has been holding the fort with the help of my loyal and diligent staff who I need to recognize and thank for hanging on in these stressful times. With this improved heart 🧡 I am available to help handle your urgent horse care needs while emphasizing safe distancing. Our elective surgeries have been postponed in order to allow me to focus on being available for you. We are considered an essential service and will work within the guidelines established by public health to keep you, our staff, our community and the public safe.
We will continue to personally care for every horse in need including those previously attended by Dr Hodge who has left the practice. We also are instituting telemedicine and accepting appointments to do telephone or FaceTime consults which are proving very helpful. Thank you again and take care!

Cheers,
Nick
