We are incredibly saddened to announce the passing of our beloved resident cat, Buddy.

Buddy has been the first face you see when you walk in, always ready to greet you and your pets since the hospital opened in 2012. He loved to be there to let other kitties know it’s okay, and be on the lookout for new friends. Buddy has had many co-workers over the years, and has always stuck with us. He was a light on the hard days, ready to give you snuggles and cat therapy whenever needed. He made everyday a little easier.

Many of you know and love Buddy, and would visit him often just to say hello and give him some well deserved love and snacks. You could often find him sleeping on the food shelves, hogging a chair in the waiting area, or hanging out with one of us at the reception desk. We encourage you to comment, email, call, or come in to share any stories of your relationship with Buddy.

The hospital is quieter this morning, and less like home without him. We all loved him dearly, and will miss him indefinitely.

🚨 Rabies Alert in Chemainus, BC 🚨
Island Health has confirmed a case of rabies in a kitten in Chemainus, BC on Vancouver Island. While rabies in domestic animals is rare in BC, Canada, this is an important reminder: it can and does still happen.

We often hear, “We don’t have rabies here.” Unfortunately, that’s not true. Rabies is present in wildlife—especially bats—and they can come into contact with pets, even indoor ones. Bats often hide in attics, under roof peaks, or other areas where pets might be exposed.

💉 The rabies vaccine is safe, effective, and essential.
Thanks to widespread vaccination and strict import rules, rabies is uncommon in pets here. But if we stop vaccinating, the risk increases.

Island Health is informing the public that a free-roaming kitten in a rural area of Chemainus recently tested positive for rabies. The likelihood that people not already identified came into contact with this animal is very low, but out of an abundance of caution we are notifying the community.

WARNING!!!!! ⚠️‼️ GRAPHIC IMAGES!!!!!

Meet Bunny… Bunny was found on the streets, and brought to Rita Woodman at A Worthy Claws Rescue Society of BC on August 26th, 2024 even though, like many other rescues, she is currently on an intake hold due to high intake volumes and low adoption rates.
Rita took in Bunny who was emaciated, extremely dehydrated, and had severe injuries.
She brought Bunny to us, fully determined to do whatever it takes to help her get the care she needs, and find her a forever home.

Bunny had a deep, 4-inch long open wound underneath her right front leg, and it was crawling with maggots. She had a tear in her ear that had almost completely healed, as well as many scratches and bruises. The cause of these wounds will remain unknown.

Dr. Ahlawat and our amazing team immediately started treatment, giving pain medications, antibiotics, subcutaneous fluids, wound debridement, and all necessary medical treatment.

Since August 26th, she has been under close observation at our facility. When we were closed for the Labour Day long weekend, Miya volunteered to take bunny home to continue bandage changes and medications.

Since then, she has had numerous rechecks and bandage changes to assess her progress.

After lots of food, love, and hours of medical care, we are pleased to say she is doing much better, and her wound is almost completely healed. We are also happy to report Bunny is currently in her forever home with our manager, Miya, who bonded very closely with her during her stay.

We have included progression pictures below for anyone who might be interested in seeing her amazing healing journey.

A special thank you to everyone who donated to cover the cost of Bunny’s medical care. We are so grateful for all of you for helping us give this girl a chance.

And thank you to Rita, for taking in this amazing kitty, and giving her a chance at life.
