✨Meet Kaitlin! ✨

Kaitlin is one of the dedicated members of our hospital team and plays a key role in caring for horses during their time with us. From assisting with procedures and standing surgeries to monitoring patients, running lab work, and supporting diagnostics, she helps ensure every horse is handled with patience, skill, and compassion. Whether she’s out on ambulatory days organizing the truck, assisting with exams and imaging, or in the hospital managing treatments and preparing medications, no two days look the same.

When not at the PMVS, Kaitlin enjoys team roping and going on adventures with her horse, Dash, alongside her barn and roping family. She also spends time doing farrier work, both independently and supporting other farriers, and loves helping teach beginners at roping events. When she’s not around horses, she enjoys camping and fishing with friends.

What Kaitlin loves most about working here:
“I love the environment at PMVS. I’ve met some of my best friends here — it truly feels like a big family.”

We’re grateful to have Kaitlin as part of our team 🤍

We are proud to announce the newest addition to the surgical team at Paton and Martin Veterinary Services — please welcome Dr. Javier Martinez! 🐎

With the addition of Dr. Martinez, we are pleased to have three surgeons on our team.

Dr. Javier Martinez is an equine surgeon who comes to us most recently from Indiana, though his career has taken him all over. From his hometown of Guadalajara, Mexico, to referral hospitals in California and Virginia. He has spent the last 5 years focusing on surgical care for racehorses, Western performance horses, and Sport horses, with a particular interest in orthopedic surgery and emergency abdominal surgery.

Moving to BC is a bit of a homecoming for Javier. He lived in Victoria years ago and has been looking for the right opportunity to move back to Canada ever since. He’s excited to finally be
here with his wife and daughter.

Outside of work, Javier stays busy exploring the outdoors and is a big soccer fan. He also enjoys getting out for a trail ride when he can and, now that he’s traded the Midwest for the
mountains, he’s looking forward to getting back on his snowboard this winter!

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Martinez to the Paton and Martin team!

Moments like this are where advanced diagnostics meet compassionate care.

MRI allows us to look beyond what can be seen on the surface — providing detailed insight into structures within the hoof and limb, and helping us better understand the source of pain or lameness.

This level of precision allows veterinarians to develop more accurate diagnoses and targeted treatment plans, ultimately supporting better outcomes for each horse.

While the technology is advanced, the approach remains the same — patience, attention to detail, and a commitment to the horse’s comfort throughout the process.

A lot of what we do relies on the people behind the scenes.

Our hospital team is there every step of the way—watching closely, making sure each horse is comfortable, and paying attention to the small details that matter. 🐴💕

What is a soundness exam – and why does it matter?

A soundness exam is a thorough evaluation of how a horse moves and functions, helping identify subtle lameness, discomfort, or performance limitations before they become more serious problems.

During a soundness exam, our veterinarians assess a horse’s movement at the walk and trot, evaluate limb and joint function, and consider factors such as conformation, workload, and history. These exams are commonly performed for performance concerns, changes in movement, or as part of a pre-purchase evaluation.

Early assessment allows us to create a proactive plan — whether that means further diagnostics, treatment, or simple management adjustments — all with the goal of supporting long-term soundness and comfort.

If your horse isn’t moving quite the way they used to, a soundness exam is often the best first step.
