Thank you so much to everyone who reached out after we put out our call for help with adoptions.

Thank you to everyone who called, came out, met the birds and opened their hearts and homes to a rescue bird. Because of you, we have managed to clear a little bit of space. 🥹🦜

This means that, for now, we can reopen our doors to EMERGENCY CASES ONLY while we continue working towards getting even more birds adopted.

When we get a call to rescue a bird, our transporters take them directly to the vets before coming to the rescue. There they receive the veterinary care they need, medications and treatment, along with disease screening, while we look for their owners or find them a new home.

Many of the birds we take in are lost-and-found birds. Some arrive sick, injured, neglected or in crisis. We don’t always know what they have been through or what medical problems they may be carrying.

Being able to get them seen by a vet immediately can make all the difference.

But we can only continue doing this if we have space.

And adoptions are a huge part of creating that space. Every adoption means we can help another bird who desperately needs somewhere safe to go.

Have you given Rosemary to your birds?

Rosemary supplies calcium, iron, and potassium, plus vitamins A and C to support bone, eye, and feather health. It is an antioxidant, aids in digestion, eases inflammation, and acts as a natural pest deterrent in coops and nests.

All of our birds love rosemary! Thank you to our volunteers who supplied a very large bag of rosemary! Enough for the entire rescue!

🦜 Protecting Our Birds From Bird Flu 🦜

Another important project ticked off the list! ❤️

With the ongoing bird flu threat, covering our aviaries has become a necessary part of protecting our rescue birds and strengthening our biosecurity measures.

We’ve now covered all of our aviaries, and we managed to find some translucent polycarbonate roofing in the scraps section of a builders’ supply store. We were able to cover the Cocky aviary, Galah aviary and Cockatiel aviary for under $200!

The best part? They still have plenty of natural light, without making the aviaries feel closed in or boxed up. It’s a simple solution, but an important one when it comes to keeping our birds protected. Best part is it can be removed and used again next time bird flu comes around 🥰

🛠️ Next project: gutting and mouse-proofing our Conure and Quaker room!

‼️ IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT ‼️

We have reached a point where we cannot take ANY more birds into care until we have more adoptions. 💔

Sadly, we started seeing a decline in adoptions when the fuel crisis was announced, and they simply haven’t picked up enough to keep pace with the number of birds coming into care.

Even when we are full, we have always tried to remain available for birds in crisis — lost and found birds with nowhere to go, owners passing away, neglect cases, and other situations where a bird urgently needs somewhere safe.

But we are now at a point where we don’t even have room for emergencies.

Sadly, this will mean some birds who need our help may not be able to come into care. This is incredibly difficult for us, because we know there are birds out there who need somewhere safe. 💔

🦜 What can you do?

If you have been considering welcoming a bird into your family, we would love to hear from you.

We still have a duty of care to every bird, and our adoption standards will not change. We will continue to carefully assess every adoption to make sure the bird and their potential new family are the right fit.

But if you can help by adopting, you are not only giving one of our beautiful birds a home — you are also helping us create space for another bird who desperately needs rescue. ❤️

H5 bird flu: update 8 August for Port Phillip
H5 bird flu has been detected in a single wild bird in Clyde in Melbourne's south-east. This detection shows the disease is spreading beyond the state's south-west.

While there have been no H5 bird flu detections in poultry or livestock, the detection in Clyde is an important reminder that everyone can help with surveillance by reporting sick or dead wildlife clusters.

You can help us by continuing to:
✅ AVOID contact with sick or dead wild birds or wildlife and their environment
✅ RECORD what you see, including location, species, how many
✅ REPORT to DEECA online or by calling the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
Report clusters (5 or more) of sick or dead wild birds of any species, anywhere in Victoria.

Report even one sick or dead:
✅ wild seabird, waterbird, shorebird or bird of prey
✅ marine mammal (e.g. seal, sea lion, dolphin).

We will assess each report and decide if testing and sampling is needed based on location and species type.

A poultry housing requirement for flocks of 50 or more birds is in place in coastal and southern Victorian shires, including metropolitan Melbourne.

We will continue monitoring the situation and provide further information as it becomes available.
