🐶🐱🚫🍫 Easter & Chocolate: A Dangerous Combo for Dogs and Cats!

Easter brings joy, egg hunts, and lots of chocolate—but it can also bring serious danger to our furry friends. 🍬🐾

Chocolate is toxic to dogs and cats and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, rapid breathing, seizures, and even heart failure depending on the amount and type ingested. And don’t forget— wrappers and foil can also cause choking or intestinal blockages.

Before you panic, there's help: use this Chocolate Toxicity Calculator to quickly assess the risk if your pet sneaks a sweet treat 👉 https://www.msdvetmanual.com/multimedia/clinical-calculator/chocolate-toxicity-calculator

✅ Keep chocolates (and their wrappings!) out of paw’s reach
✅ Educate kids and guests about pet safety
✅ Call us immediately if you're worried your dog got into something

This 6-month-old sweetheart is still waiting to find her forever home 💖

Skipper is a female kitten who’s been de-sexed, microchipped, vaccinated, and wormed—she’s all set and just waiting for the purr-fect match! 🏡✨

She’s incredibly cuddly, and gets along beautifully with dogs, cats, and even rabbits! 🐶🐱🐰

Our nurses love her so much they’ve been taking her home for weekend sleepovers and weekday hangs — she’s been spoiled with love and cuddles, and now it’s time for her to settle into her very own home 💕

💸 Adoption Fee: $250

If you're looking for a snuggly little shadow with a heart full of love, Skipper might just be your girl 🐾💕

🚗🐾 Traveling with your pets this Easter? Here are some top tips to ensure a safe and comfy ride for your furry friends! 🐾🚗

Use a Pet Seat Belt or Carrier: Keep your pet secure with a harness or in a carrier. This prevents distractions and protects them in case of an emergency stop.

Plan Breaks: Stop every 1-2 hours to let your pet stretch their legs, hydrate, and take a bathroom break. This helps reduce anxiety and keeps them comfortable.

Keep Water and Snacks Handy: Ensure your pet has access to fresh water and some of their favorite treats during the ride. Staying hydrated is key, especially on long trips.

Avoid Feeding Right Before Travel: It’s best to feed your pet a couple of hours before leaving to avoid motion sickness.

Keep Cool & Comfortable: Make sure the car is well-ventilated or air-conditioned. Pets can easily overheat, especially on long trips.

Familiar Items: Bring along a favorite blanket or toy to help your pet feel at ease during the journey.

With these simple tips, both you and your pet can enjoy the ride stress-free! 🐶🐱

Safe travels! 🌟

Stumpy the Stumpy Tail Lizard🦎 came in to see Dr. Kat for a health check and to clip a nail that was growing a little too long. We don't often see reptiles in the clinic, so we were all very excited and eager to say hello.

He is starting to slow down as his body prepares to enter brumation. Brumation is a term used to describe a period of dormancy or inactivity in reptiles, similar to hibernation in mammals. It typically occurs during colder months when environmental conditions, like temperature and light, are less favorable for reptiles to remain active.

Brumation usually occurs in species like snakes, lizards, and turtles that are cold-blooded, so their body temperature and activity levels are closely tied to external temperatures. The duration of brumation can vary depending on the species and environmental conditions, ranging from a few weeks to several months.

It was so lovely to meet him, and we hope he has a nice rest, ready for when the warmer weather returns🌞. As for the staff, we couldn’t help but feel a bit jealous - we’d love to have the luxury of a long, cozy nap until the sun comes back!🦎😴

Bowie and Chewy popped into our Torquay clinic last week for their annual vaccinations and health checks. 🐾 Both passed with flying colours and, of course, enjoyed all the tasty treats from our team! 🍪 Fun fact: these two are bilingual, understanding both French and English! How impressive is that? 😍

🐾 Desexing Your Cat: Why It's Beneficial for Both Males & Females 🐾

We’re passionate about helping cats live long, healthy lives. Did you know that desexing (spaying/neutering) your cat has numerous benefits for their health and behavior? Whether you have a male or female cat, here’s why desexing is a great choice:

For Female Cats: 🐱 Prevents unwanted pregnancies 🐱 Reduces the risk of uterine infections (like pyometra) and certain cancers (like ovarian and mammary cancers) 🐱 Eliminates the risk of going into heat, reducing yowling and restlessness 🐱 Helps reduce the number of stray cats and unwanted litters in our communities

For Male Cats: 🐱 Reduces the risk of testicular cancer and certain prostate issues 🐱 Helps prevent aggressive behaviors and territorial marking (spraying) 🐱 Lowers the likelihood of wandering and getting into dangerous situations (like fights or accidents) 🐱 Reduces the desire to roam, making them safer and more content at home

Book an appointment with us today to learn more or schedule your cat’s desexing procedure! 🐾

🌿 Caring for Wildlife: What to Do If You Encounter an Injured Animal 🦉

While enjoying the beauty of nature, you may come across a wild animal in need of help. If you find an injured animal, remember: safety is the top priority—for both you and the animal. 🦊💚

🐾 Here’s what you should do:
Stay safe: Keep a safe distance. Wild animals can be frightened or in pain, and may react unpredictably. Never approach too closely.
Assess the situation: Is the animal visibly injured or in distress? If yes, it’s time to step in.
Transporting the animal: If you’re able to do so safely, carefully contain the animal in a box or secure container to transport it. Remember, handling it with gloves is best to avoid injury to both of you.
Bring it to a professional: Contact your local Surfcoast Wildlife Rescue group or the local vet clinic right away for advice and support.

⚠️ Important reminder: Do not attempt to feed, treat, or release the animal on your own. Wild animals need professional care to ensure their best chance at recovery and survival.

If you come across a wildlife emergency, don't hesitate to reach out to us—we’re here to help!

Let’s work together to keep our local wildlife safe and thriving. 🦅💚
