The Kings Birthday Long weekend is almost here!

If your pet is on regular medication๐Ÿ’Š๐Ÿ’‰ such as insulin, anti-inflammatories, thyroid or allergy meds, please check now to make sure you have enough to last until after the long weekend.

NEVS is always happy to help, but as an emergency hospital we are not fully stocked with all the medications that your regular vet might have (like long term allergy or behaviour medications). Also, if we have not seen your animal at NEVS in the last 6 months, by NSW law we need to have a consult before dispensing prescription medication.

This can be the source of extra stress and cost, so best to check now and if you need a medication top up, contact your regular vet today.

๐Ÿฑ Meet Magic - our very special patient from last weekend!

Magic came to us as an emergency transfer from our colleagues at Vale Veterinary Hospital on Friday evening with a urinary obstruction, which is unfortunately common in male cats. What makes Magic truly one in a million? He's a male calico cat - one of the rarest colour and gender combinations in the feline world. Only 1 in 3,000 calico cats are male (the other 2,999 are girls!)

Male calicos usually carry an extra X chromosome (XXY), which gives them their distinctive tortoiseshell-and-white colouring and makes them a genuine unicorn in the cat world.

Magic spent the weekend with us on IV fluids, pain relief, and close monitoring. Our team kept a careful eye on his urinary catheter and urine output around the clock, and by Sunday he was eating well, comfortable, and ready to head home to his owner. ๐ŸŽ‰

Urinary obstruction is a serious and potentially life-threatening emergency in male cats. Signs to watch for include:
- Straining or crying in the litter tray
- Producing little or no urine
- Lethargy or hiding
- Vocalising or seeming distressed
If you notice any of these signs in your cat, please seek emergency care immediately.

Get well soon Magic! ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿค

A big thank you to the team at Mona Vale Veterinary Hospital for their prompt care and transfer ๐Ÿ™

Not your usual emergency patientโ€ฆ but just as special. ๐Ÿข

This Eastern Long Neck Turtle was brought into NEVS after being found in a paddock, away from water and in poor condition. The shell appeared dirty, suggesting it hadnโ€™t been in the water for some time, and there was concern about trauma, possibly from a car.

On arrival, our team carefully cleaned the wound with saline, a cracked section of shell was gently repositioned and stabilised using medical adhesive, with zip ties acting as a temporary splint to support healing.

This little patient is now in the care of an experienced wildlife rehabilitator. With time, rest, and ongoing care, the goal is for a full recovery and safe release back into the wild where it belongs.

If you come across injured wildlife, contacting a vet or licensed wildlife carer as soon as possible can make all the difference.

Weโ€™re always glad to help, no matter the species.
NEVS is here for overnight and emergency care whenever your pet needs it.

๐Ÿ• Skye's big recovery ๐Ÿฉน

After having a broken hind leg repaired at The Pet Specialists, Skye spent the night with our NEVS team for close post-operative care. She was kept comfortable with tailored pain relief and close monitoring. By morning, she was bright, eating well, and already starting to gently use her leg, a great sign for early recovery.

Care does not stop at once a pet goes home, especially over a long weekend - we continued to support Skye and her family with guidance on medication, how to keep an energetic puppy calm while healing and even a Paralysis Tick scare.

Recovering pups often feel better before they are fully healed, so careful management at home is just as important as the surgery itself.
We are so pleased to see Skye doing well and on the road to recovery!

If your pet needs ongoing help, during holidays or after hours, our team is here to help. Wishing Skye a smooth recovery and plenty of gentle cuddles along the way.

We are so grateful for each and every one of them. Drop a comment below and give them the shoutout they deserve! ๐Ÿ’™
