Diarrhoea and mild gastrointestinal upsets are common in pets, especially dogs, who explore the world with their mouths and often ingest questionable items!
If your dog or cat is an adult, otherwise bright, and still drinking adequate amounts of water, try these home remedies to treat them before you seek a vet consultation:
▫️Offer bland food, such as cooked lean chicken meat or white fish, for 3-4 days. Small meals often are better than large meals.
▫️Give your pet half to one cup of cooled chamomile tea three times per day, depending on their size
▫️Administer probiotics for 7-14 days. One of the best for diarrhoea is the yeast probiotic Saccharomyces boulardii (also known as Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii), available in various different pet and human formulations. My favourites are PAW by Blackmores Digesticare SB (specifically marketed to pets) and Designs for Health Floramyces.
Red flags that need more urgent vet attention, especially to assess hydration:
🚩 Dull, lethargic, or depressed mentation
🚩 Drinking small amounts only, or less than they appear to be losing in their diarrhoea
🚩 Large volumes of diarrhoea for more than 48hrs
🚩 Vomiting with diarrhoea (more than 1 or 2 vomits)
🚩 Tremors or seizure activity along with the diarrhoea
🚩 Puppies, kittens, or underweight pets who cannot regulate their glucose well
🚩 Any rabbit with diarrhoea should be seen immediately
🚩 Pets with other health concerns, especially diabetes or Addison's disease
