I love this cat so much! This is Owen, a 9 year old kitten who was adopted from us by a lovely local family when he was just a tiny kitten. It has been a joy watching him grow and caring for him all these years, but I am also very excited for the lovely new space his family are moving to on the south coast 🏑 I will miss you, Owen!

Preventative health medicine is the best kind! It is far better to ensure your pet is as healthy as they can be from the beginning, rather than to wait for disease to set in.

So when should you go to a vet? Any time you have concerns! Puppy & kitten health checks and annual vaccinations/health checks are a great touch point to ask about diet & supplements, general health care for their breed and living circumstances, and ways to maximise quality of life. A good vet should initiate these conversations, especially regarding diet πŸ₯©πŸ₯•

Not sure whether you've got the basics right? Feel free to book in a consultation for a customised preventative health care plan 🌸

Say it with me - Dogs πŸ‘ are πŸ‘ not πŸ‘small πŸ‘ humans πŸ‘!

Whilst it is ideal to feed dogs human *quality* ingredients, dogs and humans have different nutritional requirements and you should not feed your dog the same diet you feed yourself.
Some key differences:
🐢 Dogs need more protein (ideally from animal sources) than humans
🐢 Dogs need different amino acids in their diet from humans (humans have 9 essential amino acids, dogs have 10)
🐢 Dogs aren't great at using plant sources of Omega 3 (ALA eg in linseeds) so marine sources are best
🐢 Dogs can synthesise their own Vitamin C, unlike humans, but they can't synthesise enough Vitamin D from the sun and need food sources instead
🐢 Dogs need animal sources of Vitamin A, unlike humans who can utilise plant sources
🐢 No strict requirement for carbohydrates in dogs; humans are more reliant on them as an energy source
🐢 Dogs have fewer taste buds and do not crave salt and sugar as much as humans

Time for a mini mythbusting series!

Let's start with a big one - the belief that all conventional medications can be replaced with herbs.

Unfortunately this is simply not the case. Although herbs can absolutely be used in every disease situation to support the body, lessen the impact on specific organs, delay the requirement for conventional meds, and boost the immune system, they cannot replace everything. Insulin and some key cardiac medications, such as pimobendan, are the main ones that spring to mind.

This is why it's so important to seek the advice of a herbalist who is also a veterinarian 🌿🩺

Quite a few herbal formulas going out today, including two for a combination of adrenal and cardiac support (Cushing's disease and heart conditions go hand in hand, sadly), and one winging its way over the to UK next week! ✈️

It was such a pleasure treating Atlas recently, and really rewarding being able to get a good resolution of his issue without resorting to antibiotics or anything that may damage his microbiome rather than support it πŸ’ž

I don't always consult with a baby strapped to my chest, but sometimes you just have to do what is required! We've had some very busy days over the past few weeks, and when it gets busy it's all hands on deck. We always aim to see patients as rapidly as possible and to squeeze in urgent consultations and emergencies when they arise. It's amazing what you can achieve in a day with an enthusiastic team working in sync! 🐢

Freddie and I visited a preschool today to have a chat with the kids about being a vet πŸ₯° Everyone enjoyed examining Freddie, listening to his heart, and talking about how to safely approach unknown dogs. They also found it hilarious that we do temperature checks via the bottom! 🀭

I performed a home euthanasia last week of a sweet senior cat I have had as a patient for many years. She had multiple health issues, which her dedicated owner and I had managed for months, but it was clear it was time to say goodbye.

We sat out on her favourite squashy grey couch on the porch, in the warmth of the midday Autumn sun. Surrounded by a host of camellia plants with a few blooms swaying in the sea breeze, it was the perfect place to let this sweetheart ease away at the end of a life well lived. Thank you for your companionship, little Indigo πŸ’™

🌿 SPOTLIGHT ON EYEBRIGHT 🌿
I have dispensed so many formulas this week for rhinitis/sinusitis in both dogs and cats, the bottle of eyebright is getting a work out! Eyebright (Euphrasia officinalis) helps support a healthy conjunctiva in the eye, as the name suggests, but is also very useful as an anticatarrhal and astringent to help clear excess mucus and dry out the sinuses.
