This little ringtail possum was brought in to Summer Hill Village Vet with an injury to the tip of her tail. The injury was so severe that the skin was infected and had started to die, exposing a small amount of bone. This meant that the best course of action would be to remove the affected area via amputation.
Possums use their tails everyday for balance and grip, so we have to be very mindful of how we manage and treat tail injuries. To ensure that the possum will be able to thrive in their natural habitat, we cannot remove more than 30% of their total tail length. Fortunately, for this little possum, we were able to remove just the affected tip, leaving her with most of her tail. She was sent home with a lovely carer for some pain relief and TLC.
