"How did Titan's face get so wet when the water is only up to his chest?", you ask? Well...

Q: How do you encourage dogs to walk on the underwater treadmill?
A: Usually it only takes 2 or 3 sessions before they know exactly what to do, but many dogs will need a little encouragement for their first session. We find most dogs are happy to work for treats, while some are more toy motivated. For dogs who prefer toys, using a special toy that they only get access to during hydrotherapy sessions can be very motivating. Charlie walks with his favourite red squeaky ball.

Q: What if my dog isn't particularly food or toy motivated?
A: Owners are encouraged to stand at the front of the underwater treadmill so your dog is walking towards you (make sure to give them lots of praise and encouragement!) If a dog needs a little more support or guidance, a staff member can get in the underwater treadmill with them. Walking on the treadmill can feel a little scary or unnatural the first time, but most dogs get used to it very quickly!

Good work Luna! ⭐️ Luna the Newfoundland has returned to hydrotherapy as part of her weight loss journey. She's been back for a month, has lost 3.3kg and her waist measurement has reduced by 5cm.

Walking on an underwater treadmill is a safe, low-impact form of exercise that helps overweight dogs burn calories while reducing strain on their joints. Hydrotherapy is only part of the solution, owners also need to be diligent about reducing the amount of calories their dog eats - Luna's owners have done a great job, I know it's hard to resist those puppy dog eyes!

Meet the Team – Tasmyn
Many of you will meet Tasmyn (and Cinnamon!) when you visit DogSwim Canberra! Tasmyn joined the team in 2023 after working as a veterinary nurse, where she developed a strong interest in helping dogs move more comfortably and recover well after injury or surgery. She brings a calm, patient approach to sessions and takes the time to help dogs feel relaxed and confident in the water — especially those who might be unsure on their first visit. You’ll often find her encouraging the nervous ones, celebrating the small wins, and making sure every dog has a positive experience. We’re lucky to have her as part of the DogSwim Canberra team 💙🐶

Did you know… Our underwater treadmill is equipped with resistance jets which we use for dogs who are ready for more of a challenge. Nike competes in agility, so he does hydrotherapy for fitness and strengthening 💪
