Howdy impeccable canine family!

Some exciting news: I have taken on a second job rehoming ex racing greyhounds to pet homes in the ACT region. Don’t fear! I will still be looking after your furry friends. ❤️ I just have to teak my schedule over the next few weeks as occasionally I will get call outs out of state to pick up and assess some long dogs for their new homes. I will be in touch with anyone whose appointments may require shuffling ASAP. As always my automated system will send out appointment reminders prior to appointments, please get in touch with me if you are unsure when your next appointment is or if you need to reshuffle. I thank you all for your patience and understanding during this time while I embark on this amazing new venture and stay tuned for cute greyhound photos.

The key to resolving anxiety is exposure.

One of the biggest misconceptions I see is that anxious dogs need to be protected from everything that worries them. In reality, avoiding those triggers often feeds the anxiety rather than fixing it.

Dogs learn through experience. When they’re gradually and safely exposed to the things that make them uneasy, they start to realise those situations aren’t actually dangerous. This is how confidence is built.

The key is controlled, positive exposure:
• Start small – work below your dog’s panic threshold
• Pair the experience with something they love (food, play, praise)
• Allow them to observe and process without forcing interaction
• Repeat consistently so it becomes familiar, not frightening

Avoid flooding your dog or pushing them too far too fast. That can backfire and deepen the fear. Instead, think of it as building a ladder—one small step at a time.

A dog that never experiences the world can’t learn that it’s safe. But a dog that is guided through it with patience and structure can learn to cope, adapt, and thrive.

Confidence isn’t created by avoidance—it’s created through experience.

If you’re working with an anxious dog and not sure where to start, reach out. The right plan makes all the difference 🐶

Monty and his brother truffles came in for their tidy ups today, they are both not fans of the bath or having their lips shaved but are massive fans of cuddles.

Thinking about a whippet as a pet? The first thing people will tell you is: “nEvEr LeT tHeM oFf LeAsH ThEy wOnT cOmE BaCk.” To a certain extent this can be true if you do not train a solid recall in your dog and set them up for success but you can 100% easily teach a sighthound to recall.

What do I mean by that?

🐾Train your recall reliably on a long line before ever unleashing your dog in public or around hazards. If they do not understand the command or expectation they are not likely to be able to complete the desired behaviour. (Especially if there is something exciting near by such as a kangaroo, person or other dog.) Having a long line means you can guide them back to you.

🐾 Have realistic expectations: Until your dog knows a behaviour, can reliably repeat it and gains impulse control do not expect them to be flawless every time. Give them some grace and take a few steps back in your training if you need too. Remember, a master of any skill repetitiously practice’s and perfects the basics.

🐾 Set them up in a safe and controlled environment for training sessions and when off leash. Think in millimetres, centimetres and then meters. Doing so keeps everyone happy, safe, keeps expectations clear with out over stimulation, provides space for learning to take place and prevents your dog from practising unsafe or unwanted behaviours.

🐾 Have fun with your dogs and celebrate the small wins in your training. We often as people take things too seriously.

Noodle for the longest time struggled with her impulse control during her puppy and long lived adolescence stages. She is pictured here in a vacant enclosed mesh fenced paddock. Just off to the side is a mob of Roo’s that she would absolutely love to chase down, but she knows in this context that she needs to practise her impulse control and pay attention. In a sprint dogs ring the context is completely different, she can chase that lure like a little rocket when she gets the relevant Que. The set up is safe and we are not in a proximity to disrupt or distress the Roos. We have distance, a safe space for off leash work that isn’t a problem to others and a relatively predicable environment here. Would I walk her into the mob of kangaroo’s? No. Is she 100% perfect in her behaviour 24/7 365? Absolutely not 😂 But if we find any holes in her training we work on them even if we need to take a few steps back to clarify expectations. Anyone who tells you their animal of any species is perfectly behaved all the time is a little delulu, dogs like people have their good and bad days but it is our job to teach them what they do not yet know. (Or occasionally choose to forget 😂)

🌧️ Why We Don’t Walk in the Rain or During Storms 🌩️

Just a quick reminder that all dog walks and walk-and-train sessions are paused during heavy rain, thunderstorms, or extreme weather. This isn’t just about staying dry — it’s about health and safety for your dog and for myself.

☔ Here’s why we reschedule in bad weather:
• Wet, slippery surfaces increase the risk of injury for both dogs and humans.
• Thunder and lightning can cause stress, panic, or reactive behaviour in dogs.
• Cold, damp conditions can lead to health issues, especially in older dogs and those prone to hotspots and skin issues.
• Training in poor conditions is rarely productive — a stressed or uncomfortable dog won’t retain new skills effectively.

Your dog’s wellbeing is always my top priority, and I want to ensure every session is safe, calm, and beneficial. If you’re after wet weather ideas during storms or rainy days when we can’t get out and about, please reach out for some indoor training and brain game ideas.

If we need to reschedule due to the weather, I’ll always reach out with as much notice as possible and arrange a time that suits you.

Thanks for your understanding! 🐾💙
