WHO ELSE TALKS TO THEIR DOG LIKE THIS?

I’m convinced pet owners have some of the most ridiculous conversations in the world, and we don’t even notice we’re doing it anymore.

You leave the house and say, “I’ll only be five minutes,” as though your dog understands both English and time. You come home late and apologise like they’ve been sitting there checking the clock. You explain where you’re going, why they can’t come, and that yes, you do still love them even though you’re taking the bins out alone.

Then there are the full negotiations. “Please don’t start.” “Don’t look at me like that.” “You’ve already had dinner.” “That was not a cough, that was a request for cheese.”

And somehow none of this feels strange.

We talk to them like tiny furry housemates with strong opinions and questionable boundaries. Honestly, most of them probably do understand more than we think. Or at the very least, they’ve worked out exactly which facial expression gets results.

Be honest. What’s the most ridiculous thing you’ve caught yourself saying to your pet?

IT’S AMAZING WHAT A BODY CAN DO WITH THE RIGHT SUPPORT

There’s a moment we get to witness in rehabilitation that never gets old.

The first time a dog recovering from surgery starts placing weight through their leg again.

The first time a senior pet looks at the stairs and thinks, Yep. I can do that.

The first time a tail wags with a little more enthusiasm because moving doesn’t feel quite so hard anymore.

It might look small from the outside.

But when you’re the person who loves that pet?

It’s everything.

At Animal Wellness, rehabilitation is about more than recovery. It’s about helping pets move better, feel stronger, regain confidence, and enjoy everyday life more comfortably.

Our rehabilitation nurses support pets recovering from surgery, injury, illness, and age-related mobility changes. Every pet is different, so every rehabilitation plan is tailored to their body, their needs, and their stage of recovery.

Depending on what your pet needs, their plan may include:

🐾 Hydrotherapy in our underwater treadmill
The warmth and buoyancy of the water help support movement while reducing pressure on joints and muscles.

🐾 Balance and strengthening exercises
Designed to improve mobility, coordination, confidence, and overall function.

🐾 Supportive therapies
Including laser therapy, remedial massage, and Accell Therapy to help pets move more comfortably and support their recovery journey.

Because sometimes the goal isn’t dramatic.

Sometimes the goal is simply getting up more easily.

Walking with more confidence.

Climbing the stairs again.

Playing for a little longer.

Enjoying life with less discomfort.

And honestly? Those wins are magic.

If your pet is recovering from surgery, managing an injury, or starting to slow down with age, rehabilitation may help them get back to doing more of the things they love.

Bookings are essential, as our rehabilitation team stays wonderfully busy helping pets move, heal, and feel better.

𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐥? 🐾

Not the vague kind.

The “what do I actually do when my dog has itchy skin, tummy troubles, anxiety, ageing joints, diet issues, or I’m staring down a scary diagnosis and feeling completely overwhelmed?” kind.

That’s exactly why Dr Elaine created her NaturopathVet book series.

These are practical, easy-to-follow guides for pet owners who want to understand their animal’s health better - without falling into the black hole of random internet advice.

Inside the collection, you’ll find support for:

🐕 everyday natural health for dogs and cats
🌿 herbal medicine and natural remedies
🥩 nutrition, real food, and long-term wellness
💚 integrative cancer care and quality of life
💧 safe essential oil use around animals
🌏 traditional Chinese veterinary herbal medicine

And the best part?

This isn’t about choosing between conventional veterinary care or natural therapies.

It’s about knowing how to use both wisely.

Dr Elaine’s approach is practical, compassionate, and grounded in decades of real-world veterinary experience, because pet care should feel empowering, not confusing.

Whether you’re just starting to explore holistic care, wanting to feed your pet better, or looking for extra support through a more serious health journey, there’s a book here to help you feel more informed and confident.

Because when you understand more, you can care better.

I'M COMING TOO

I've become convinced that dogs believe we are completely incapable of functioning without supervision.

The evidence is overwhelming.

The moment you stand up, they stand up. It doesn't matter whether they've been asleep for three hours or whether you're only walking ten metres to put a coffee cup in the sink. Somewhere deep inside their brain, an alarm goes off that says, "The human is moving. This requires immediate investigation."

Our own dogs have reached the point where they don't even pretend it's a coincidence anymore.

If someone gets up from the couch, they're up too. If someone heads towards the laundry, they're right behind them. If someone walks outside to put something in the bin, suddenly there's a furry assistant standing at the back door insisting on being included in whatever important mission is apparently taking place.

The funny part is that they never seem to have an actual plan.

They don't know where you're going. They don't know what you're doing when you get there. Most of the time they arrive, look around, realise absolutely nothing interesting is happening, and then follow you back to wherever you started.

And yet they continue to do it. Every day. Without fail.

Personally, I think they believe they're managing us.

Tell me I'm wrong.

Does your pet follow you everywhere, or are they slightly more respectful of personal space than the dogs we know? 😂🐾

Meet Frankie and Chiken 🐾

Yes… Chiken. Excellent name.

These two gorgeous dogs came in from the same home, and it was very clear they are deeply loved, adored, and absolutely part of the family.

They were also, to use the technical term… a couple of chubby monkeys.

Cute? Very.
Ideal for their health? Not so much.

And this is such an important reminder because weight gain can happen so easily, even with the most loving and well-meaning dog parents.

A few extra treats here.
A little less movement there.
A “but look at that face” snack from the dinner plate.
And suddenly, those extra kilos can start putting pressure on the body.

For Frankie, stress and diet were contributing to tummy troubles.
For Chiken, carrying extra weight was putting strain on the heart.

Both came in for a vet check, and as part of every thorough visit, we do a mouth check too.

It’s lucky we did, because we found that Frankie had an infected tooth.

Dental infections can be painful and, if left untreated, can lead to other health issues too. Sometimes our pets are incredibly good at hiding discomfort, which is why regular checks are so important.

They also had a lovely pedicure while they were here, because let’s be honest, clipping dogs’ nails at home is not always easy. Some dogs hate it, some owners dread it, and sometimes it’s just much safer and less stressful to have it done during a visit.

Frankie and Chiken are clearly loved to bits.

This is a gentle reminder that keeping an eye on your pet’s weight, teeth, nails, diet, and overall wellbeing is one of the most loving things you can do.

Just like with humans, a healthy weight helps support the heart, joints, digestion, energy levels, and quality of life.

And if your dog has quietly become a little more “cuddly potato” than “healthy hound”… you’re definitely not alone.

Small changes can make a big difference 🐶

Regular checks, the right diet, a bit more movement, and keeping those nails and teeth in good shape all help your dog feel more comfortable, happy, and well.

Frankie and Chiken were absolute stars, and we’re so glad we got to help them take another step toward feeling their best. 🐾

The best part of a routine health check isn't confirming what's wrong. It's finding out what we can prevent. If your pet is due for a check-up, we'd love to help keep them feeling their best.

Meet Bella 🐾

A few months ago, Bella's family started noticing little things that didn't seem important on their own.

She wasn't as excited about walks as she used to be. She'd hesitate before getting into the car. Sometimes she'd stop halfway up the stairs and think about it for a moment before continuing.

Nothing dramatic had happened. There wasn't a big injury or a single day where everything changed.

It was more like Bella was slowly becoming less and less like herself.

The hardest part was not knowing where the line was between "getting older" and "something isn't right."

Her family did what most loving owners do. They adjusted. They walked a little slower. They lifted her into the car when she needed help. They told themselves she was just having an off day.

Then those off days started happening more often.

When Bella came to Animal Wellness, the team put together a rehabilitation plan designed to help her move more comfortably and rebuild her confidence. Part of that plan included the Accell Therapy Mat, along with other supportive therapies tailored specifically to Bella's needs.

What her family remembers most isn't a single dramatic moment.

It's all the little things that started coming back.

The way she began following people around the house again. The way she greeted visitors at the front door instead of staying on her bed. The way she started carrying her toys around like she used to.

One afternoon, Bella's family were getting ready to take another dog for a walk when Bella appeared beside the front door with her lead in her mouth.

She simply stood there looking expectantly at her family as if to say, "Well? Aren't we going?"

Apparently there were tears.

Not because Bella ran a marathon. Not because she was suddenly a puppy again.

Because for the first time in a long time, she looked happy, confident, and completely herself.

Sometimes the biggest victories aren't measured in kilometres walked or stairs climbed.

Sometimes they're measured in seeing your dog do something you thought they might never do again.

🧡

If your pet has been slowing down, avoiding walks, struggling with mobility, or just not enjoying the things they once loved, it may be worth looking a little deeper. Growing older is normal. Living with unnecessary discomfort isn't.

Just Another Day at Animal Wellness 🐾

Meet Ziggy - and no, not Dr Elaine’s Ziggy-Bob. This Ziggy is a lovely greyhound cross who came in with a nasty bite wound.

Thankfully, he was in very good hands with Dr James.

With calm, steady care and some classic no-fuss vet work, Ziggy was cleaned up, checked over, and patched back together with 8 staples.

No anaesthetic, just a very tough dog, a very experienced vet, and one of those everyday clinic moments that reminds us how much skill goes into making things look simple.

Ziggy, for his part, didn’t seem too worried about the whole situation at all. In fact, we’re not entirely sure he realised anything dramatic had happened. 😂

We’re very lucky to have Dr James helping us here at Animal Wellness - friendly, funny, experienced, and wonderfully calm under pressure.

Nice work, Dr James. And good job, Ziggy. 🐾✨
