DAY 1 – Hill’s Symposium

The first day was a focus on gastrointestinal disease presented by the renowned Dr. Stanley Marks. The morning session covered all things diarrhoea – from bloody stools to protein losing enteropathies and we also touched on lymphoma in cats. We then had a delicious and nutritious (thanks Hill’s) lunch. The afternoon session took a deep dive into Dr. Marks’ area of interest – gastroesphageal reflux. We explored cases of reflux during routine procedures and important interventions to prevent gastric reflux events. We will be taking this information back to the clinic to further improve our anaesthetic protocols, especially for our brachycephalic patients. everyday’s a school day !!

Meet the team Monday.
Caryn is one of the longest serving Veterinarians at Vet HQ (starting with us in 2009!!).
Caryn was inspired to become a Vet thanks to the joy of being around animals since childhood - by becoming a Vet she was able to better advocate for their wellbeing.
Caryn values how important they are to the family dynamic and how much love and joy they bring. She aims to treat her patients as she would expect her own family pets to be treated.

As our pets age, their needs begin to shift and a little extra support can make a world of difference.

Here are five simple proactive ways to help your senior companion stay comfortable, healthy, and happy:

🐾 Schedule routine vet check‑ups , ideally twice yearly
Senior pets can develop age‑related conditions quickly. More frequent health checks help us catch changes early, adjust care plans and keep them feeling their best.

🍽️ Switch to a diet formulated for senior needs
Older pets often benefit from diets that support joint health, digestion, and weight management. The right nutrition can boost energy levels and overall well being.

🏃‍♂️ Maintain exercise, but modify frequency and intensity
Gentle, consistent movement keeps joints mobile and muscles strong. Shorter, slower, or more frequent walks may be more comfortable as your pet ages. Hydrotherapy is a great low impact option for older pets with stiff and sore joints.

🧩 Encourage cognitive stimulation with games, toys, and puzzles
Mental enrichment helps keep senior brains sharp. Simple scent games, food puzzles and toys can brighten their day.

🏡 Modify the home environment for comfort
Think soft bedding, non‑slip mats, ramps for furniture access, and easy‑to-reach resources. Small changes can greatly improve mobility and reduce stress.

✨ Every senior pet is unique and their needs change over time.

Book in with our nurses to chat about your pet’s personalised senior‑care plan and ensure they’re getting the support they deserve.
