So many lovely hounds looking for homes at - here we have Goose, Dinka and Pecco! I’ve been loving integrating some photography into my usual behaviour rehabilitation work and getting to capture their unique personalities. It’s also a surprisingly effective way to reduce social pressure on any nervous hounds as I am looking down at my camera viewfinder and observing behaviour rather than looking directly at the dog.

This was very effective for Goose, who can be initially wary of new people, but he was relaxing around me very quickly into our session and approaching when he was ready!

Their world completely changed.
And they don’t know why.

We see their quietness as coping or relaxing so we can accidentally expect too much, far too soon.

One of the hardest parts with newly rehomed dogs is their stress doesn’t always look dramatic.
We would recognise that easily, but some dogs become extremely still and quiet.

Some follow people constantly.
Some sleep more.
Some avoid all interactions.
Others become busy, mouthy, overexcited or unsettled.

We have a job to do from the second they arrive and it’s not about training.
It should be far more about observation.

We should be watching.
Learning who they are.
Recognising patterns.
Seeing what changes their emotional state.

What startles them?
What helps them relax?
What environments suddenly change their body language?
When do they seek distance?
What happens around food, visitors, handling or rest?

They are telling us who they are and how they are coping, often as clearly as they can and we have a duty to listen.

One thing nearly all rehomed dogs share? It’s incredibly easy to unintentionally overwhelm them.

And it’s usually done with the very best of intentions.

Greyt job to the hound and guardian teams graduating from this morning’s Life Skills for Hounds!

It was wonderful to see the hounds learning new skills around each other in a stimulating environment! Everyone did so well!

Big congratulations to the lovely hounds (and their guardians!) graduating from their Social Skills course this morning!

It has truly been a joy to see all of these teams build their skills and grow their confidence over the last six weeks! We had hounds going from reactive to relaxed around other dogs in just a few weeks - an amazing achievement!

Starting up our first Life Skills for Hounds class of the year at Centennial Park! Day one already saw Senna, Maverick and Rhubarb starting to relax around each other, watch other passing dogs at a distance and start building basic engagement skills. These classes are all about meeting hounds where they’re at and giving them easy wins from the start - for some dogs it might just be being in a stimulating environment and being able to relax, for others it could be responding to their name and taking treats!

We’re going above and beyond just a basic obedience class and focusing on functional behaviours that give your dog the skills to thrive!

And, above all, these classes are about creating positive experiences while being out and about, building confidence and resilience!

Come and join us in March for our popular Social Skills for Hounds course - designed to create a safe and fun environment to socialise your sighthound!

This is a 6 week course designed to build confidence in new environments and teach your hound how to be around other dogs!

We work on:
✅Teaching emotional regulation for our dogs, teaching them how to relax around triggers
✅Creating positive associations with other dogs
✅Teaching your dog how to appropriately greet other dogs (if they are able to do so within the 6 week time frame)
✅Teaching you how to handle your reactive or anxious dog and prevent rehearsal of undesirable behaviours
✅Building your hound's confidence in a new environments
