This week our vets have been investigating an ear infection in one of our feline patients. In the first photo you can see the vets looking at a microscope slide made from the discharge collected from the cat’s ear. In the second photo is what we see after preparing and staining a slide of that sample.

The process is called cytology. We take a swab of the discharge, roll it onto a glass slide, apply special stains and then look under the microscope. The stains allow us to clearly see whether yeast, bacteria or inflammatory cells are present.

Cytology is an incredibly important tool for us. It helps us confirm the cause of infections, choose the most effective treatment and monitor how well a patient is responding. It isn’t just useful for ears: we also use it to investigate skin problems, lumps, wounds and other conditions.

By looking beyond what we can see with the naked eye, we can provide more accurate and tailored care for our patients.

In scrubby or bushy regions, summer can equal snakes! 🐍

If you visit areas with your dog where venomous snakes could be present, it’s best to keep your pet on a short lead by your side. It’s also a good idea to be aware of the more common symptoms of snake bite, which can include:
✅ Temporary collapse
✅ Weakness or wobbliness
✅ Muscle tremors
✅ Large pupils
✅ Loss of bladder or bowel control
✅ Dark or bloody discoloured urine

⚠️ If you ever suspect your pet has been bitten by a snake, try to stay calm and seek immediate veterinary treatment.

For more information on snake bites in pets, consult our snake-savvy vets.

“Why does my dog keep getting ear infections?” 👂

Whilst any dog can develop a one-off ear issue, some unlucky pets seem to have a predisposition to problems.

Recurrent ear infections in dogs are commonly secondary to underlying allergies (such as environmental or food allergies) but can also occur in dogs who swim frequently, breeds with droopy ears such as spaniels, and breeds with naturally narrow ear canals such as Shar Peis.

If your pet suffers from recurrent ear infections, it’s best to book a consult and lend us your ears, as there are lots we can offer to help manage the issue. 📞

Meet Sparkles

Sparkles came in today for dental treatment after we discovered her to have some broken teeth and what looked like a resorbing molar. During her procedure we took xrays of her teeth. In the dental x-ray below you can see an area of abnormal bone circled in green showing changes that can’t be seen just by looking in the mouth. This xray showed her to have infection in the bone around one her her broken teeth. Dental x-rays are so important for finding hidden problems and guiding treatment.

Before her procedure, Sparkles also had a pre-anaesthetic blood test. This revealed she has early renal (kidney) disease. With this knowledge, we were able to carefully adjust her anaesthetic plan to keep her as safe and comfortable as possible.

Dental infections can be very painful and a source of ongoing health issues if left untreated. Thanks to x-rays, good planning, and tailored anaesthetic care, Sparkles is now on the road to feeling much better. 💚

Does your dog experience episodes of “reverse sneezing”? 😮‍💨

Reverse sneezing is when pets appear to get stuck in a temporary loop of snorting air in via their nose, almost as though they have something stuck in their nose or throat.

While a lot of dogs will reverse sneeze on occasion, it tends to occur more frequently in pets with overlong soft palates (such as flat-faced breeds), long-nosed sighthounds, and pets experiencing nose or throat irritation due to allergies or airborne irritants such as pollen or smoke.

If you have any concerns about your dog’s respiratory health, take a deep breath and consult our veterinary team! 🐾

PSA (Pet Service Announcement): please don’t forget to stay on top of regular parasite prevention for your pet, especially as the weather warms up! ☀️🐕

Warmer conditions favour the survival and breeding of pesky parasites such as fleas, ticks and some intestinal worms. Additionally, in heartworm-endemic areas, mosquitoes capable of spreading dangerous heartworm disease between pets will also become more active.

For advice on the safest and most effective parasite prevention routines for your pet, consult our knowledgeable team.

Does your cat get runny eyes? 👀

Persians and similar breeds are more likely to get regular eye goop due to their flatter facial anatomy. However, recurrent eye discharge can also be associated with other health issues, such as environmental allergies or cat flu.

If your cat regularly gets weepy eyes but seems otherwise fine, we’d recommend twice daily cleaning around their eyes with a clean, warm, wet compress. However, if your cat’s eye discharge is associated with any redness, irritation, or other unwellness, it’s best to have them checked by one of our vets.

When it comes to feline eye health, our team is eye-mazing!

This is Cooper the Border Collie, looking a little sorry for himself after his big weekend adventure. He managed to sneak into over 500 grams of raisins – which can be highly toxic to dogs.

Raisins, grapes and sultanas can cause serious problems for our pets, including sudden kidney failure. The tricky part is that the toxic dose isn’t the same for every dog – some can become very unwell after eating just a small number.

Thankfully Cooper’s quick-thinking owner caught him in the act and brought him straight to us. We were able to induce vomiting and get the raisins out of his system before they could do harm.

Cooper is now doing really well – but this is a great reminder to keep grapes, raisins and sultanas well out of reach of curious noses!

This is Ruby the Schnauzer who is currently staying with us in hospital. She has been unwell with both pancreatitis and HGE but is in very good spirits and getting lots of TLC from the team.

Schnauzers are unfortunately more prone than many other breeds to developing pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas which can cause vomiting, abdominal pain and a very unwell patient. HGE, or haemorrhagic gastroenteritis, can also cause sudden severe diarrhoea and dehydration. Both conditions can be very serious but with good supportive care most dogs make a full recovery.

Ruby has been such a brave and gentle patient through it all. And we cannot go without mentioning her absolutely amazing eyelashes which have been winning hearts all over the clinic.

We are very proud of Ruby and sending her lots of love for a smooth recovery.
