High Country camping with Blue & Bear 🏕️🐴

We took Blue and Bear camping at Fry’s Flat in the Howqua Hills, right by the Howqua River, and we couldn’t be happier with how these two handled the trip. They floated like a dream there and back and stayed so calm from the first river crossing to the last stretch of trail.

The High Country threw a bit of everything at them. They walked through flowing water, rode past big cliffs, tackled plenty of steep climbs and descents, and took their time around some tight, narrow corners. Whatever came up, they just took it in their stride. We couldn’t be prouder of them. 🤎

There’s something pretty special about heading out into the hills on horses you trust. When they’re that steady and willing, you can relax, take in the scenery and just enjoy the ride. A good temperament means so much to us, and Blue and Bear ticked every box on this trip.

🤎 LIFE AFTER RACING | SPACES NOW AVAILABLE 🤎

Brooklyn Ridge Equine · Balliang, Victoria

A racing career may come to an end, but there is so much more ahead for a Standardbred.

We’re opening spaces to harness racing trainers and owners seeking a thoughtful, experienced pathway into life after racing for their horses.

As a licensed harness racing trainer with my own team of racehorses, I have a deep appreciation for this beautiful breed. I specialise in educating Standardbreds both on and off the track, and helping them transition into a ridden career is something I’m incredibly passionate about.

Since establishing Brooklyn Ridge Equine, we have successfully rehomed over 50 Standardbreds—something we take enormous pride in. Behind every horse is time, patience, consistent education and a commitment to finding a well-matched home.

🌿 Individual care from the beginning

Every horse entering our program undergoes an individual assessment so we can understand their temperament, physical needs and education. Dental care, hoof care, massage and bodywork are assessed and arranged as needed, alongside any further veterinary attention required.

We want each horse comfortable, supported and ready to learn before asking them to progress.

🌿 Education with a purpose

Each horse follows a program tailored to their needs, confidence and stage of development. This includes establishing groundwork, manners and clear communication, then developing the foundations under saddle to give them the best possible start to their ridden career.

We place a strong emphasis on exposure beyond the arena. As each horse becomes ready, we introduce different environments and experiences, including trail rides, off-property outings, shows and competitions where suitable.

Our aim is to help them become confident, adaptable partners, while learning what they enjoy and the type of home in which they are most likely to thrive. Every horse progresses at their own pace.

🌿 Thoughtful rehoming

We take the time to understand our horses before they are offered for rehoming. Their temperament, education and rider suitability guide our search for a carefully matched, loving forever home.

There is so much care, effort and heart invested in these horses, and we want their next chapter to reflect that.

We welcome enquiries for:

• mares and geldings of any age.

• Horses retiring without significant injuries that would affect a future ridden career.

• any age / any height

• Horses needing education and support to transition into life after racing.

•• We are not equipped to accommodate stallions.••

🌿 Transport & arrivals

Drop-off at our Balliang property is welcome and preferred. We’re also happy to discuss potential collection throughout Victoria or meeting trainers at race meetings, subject to availability and suitable arrangements.

If you’re a trainer or owner with a Standardbred approaching retirement, we’d love to hear about them and discuss whether our program would be a suitable fit.

🤎 SOLD — DINO, NOW KNOWN AS BIGSY🤎

Our beautiful gentle giant has found his perfect home with Nikki — before we even had the chance to advertise him! ✨

Nikki reached out very early on about Dino and has stayed in contact with us throughout his breaking-in journey, following his progress as he took each new step in his education. It’s so lovely to see someone who has been cheering him on from the beginning now become his person.

With his amazing temperament, gentle nature and willingness to try, we always knew this special boy would be snapped up quickly. He’s a big horse with an equally big heart, and we couldn’t have asked for a better home for him.

Nikki, thank you for giving Bigsy such a wonderful next chapter. We’re so happy for you both and can’t wait to follow your adventures together. 🤎

🎃👻 ALL TREATS, NO SPOOKS — BROOKLYN RIDGE TAKES ON HALLOWEEN! 👻🎃

Why walk around trick-or-treating when you can arrive on horseback?! 🐴

Our Brooklyn Ridge crew swapped their usual scenery for costumes, candy and a Halloween adventure — and we honestly could not be prouder of every single horse we took out. 🤎

This was a BIG outing with so much happening around them. Busy streets, people everywhere, excited children running up and squealing, passing traffic, cars and motorbikes going past, kids riding bikes, and costumes of every shape and size. There were even those big, inflatable costumes that can look very confronting through a horse’s eyes!

Then came the houses… 🕷️🕸️

Front yards filled with spooky decorations, flashing lights, unexpected noises and moving Halloween animatronics — the decorations that suddenly jump out or come to life just as you pass! Around every corner there was something different to see, hear and take in.

And our horses? They took it ALL in their stride. 🥹🤎

Not one horse spooked throughout the outing. They looked, listened and calmly carried on, taking in the atmosphere without becoming overwhelmed by everything happening around them. Watching them navigate such a busy, unusual environment with that much composure left us beyond happy.

We were especially proud of how beautifully they handled the children’s excitement. With little people running over, calling out and wanting to see the horses, there was plenty of attention coming their way. Our crew remained patient and settled, bringing a little extra magic to an already exciting evening. There is something pretty special about seeing the smiles that horses can bring to people’s faces. ✨

Outings like this remind us just how much we value a kind nature and a good temperament. Education and preparation matter enormously, and seeing the horses respond so calmly to unfamiliar sights and sounds was incredibly rewarding. Their willingness to listen to their riders and work through such a different setting made us so proud.

Behind these photos are many hours of care, groundwork, patience and getting to know each horse as an individual. To head out together and enjoy an experience like this is one of those moments that makes all that effort feel so worthwhile. 🤎

We came home with full hearts, some lovely memories and an even greater appreciation for the wonderful horses we get to work with. They exceeded our expectations, and we couldn’t have asked for a better Halloween crew. 🐴🎃

Happy Halloween from all of us at Brooklyn Ridge Equine — including our four-legged trick-or-treaters! 👻🍬🤎

Blue headed out for his first trail ride with us today, getting ready for our High Country adventure next week! 🤎

He was such a good boy, taking everything in his stride and making the ride an absolute pleasure. The more we get to know him, the happier we are with our purchase—his lovely nature and willing temperament make him such a special addition to our team.

We can’t wait to hit the High Country trails with our beautiful Barbie pony! 🤎

Dino’s first outing today, and what an absolute gentleman he was! 🤎

Our beautiful Standardbred gelding stands at around 16.3–17hh, and while he’s certainly a big boy, he has the gentlest nature. He was insanely quiet today, taking everything in his stride and showing us just what a lovely temperament he has.

We believe Dino will be ready to find his new home very shortly. We already have a couple of people on our shortlist to get in touch with, and with his beautiful nature, we’re expecting this gentle giant to be snapped up very quickly! 🤎

🤎 NACHO — SOLD 🤎

Our handsome client pony Nacho has officially sold! It’s been a pleasure having this talented boy in our program, watching his progress and helping him take the next step towards his new home.

Thank you to his owner for trusting Brooklyn Ridge Equine with his education and sale, and congratulations to his new family. We wish you many wonderful adventures together! 🤎
