Darting Practical for Vet Students

At Onderstepoort, future veterinarians had the opportunity to take part in a hands-on darting practical — an important step in building real-world skills for wildlife medicine.

We’re proud that Motsumi Darts could sponsor the event by providing:
✅ Darts
✅ Blanks
✅ Prizes for the participants

Supporting the next generation of wildlife veterinarians is central to our mission — ensuring they are equipped with both the knowledge and the right tools to manage Africa’s wildlife safely and responsibly.

Zebras on Their Way to Auction

Transporting wild animals is a process that requires skill, care, and the right equipment. These zebras were safely loaded into secure crates under the supervision of experienced wildlife professionals.
Specially designed tools such as the Motsumi Prodder and Motsumi Pole Syringe are sometimes used during the process — not to cause harm, but to ensure:
✅ The safety of the animals and handlers
✅ Calm, controlled movement during loading
✅ Safe administration of medication or sedation when required

With the right training and equipment, every precaution is taken to keep stress levels as low as possible and safeguard these magnificent animals on their journey to auction.

Contact us on +27 87 351 8324 for your specific requirements.

When to Use a Pole Syringe?

A pole syringe is a valuable tool for administering medications, tranquilizers, or vaccines to animals while maintaining a safe distance. It is particularly useful in wildlife, veterinary, and livestock management.

Ideal Situations for Using a Pole Syringe:
✅ Close-range drug administration – When a dart is not necessary or practical
✅ Sedation or medication in confined spaces – Pens, crates, or transport enclosures
✅ Minimizing animal stress – Reduces the need for capture or excessive restraint
✅ When dealing with sensitive or aggressive animals – Enhances handler safety
✅ Emergency treatment – Quick administration in the field without requiring darting equipment

Common Applications:
🔹 Wildlife conservation & management
🔹 Zoo & exotic animal care
🔹 Veterinary use in large & small animals
🔹 Livestock handling

World Wild Dog Day

African wild dogs are among Africa’s most endangered carnivores. Known for their speed, resilience, and strong bonds, these incredible animals continue to face threats from habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and disease.

At Motsumi Darts, we’re proud to play a role in their protection — supporting wildlife veterinarians with the tools they need for safe immobilization, collaring, relocation, and medical interventions.

Today, we celebrate the wild dog — and the dedicated efforts to keep their future alive.

Testimonial from Dr HO Reuter

A recent visit to Motsumi Darts production factory was impressive. High-tech precision engineering machines operated by dedicated staff produce state-of-the-art, robust, accurate, and reliable remote delivery devices, we all know as Motsumi darts, in suitable sizes and with needle lengths for all species.

I have used Motsumi darts to administer potent immobilizing drugs on a multitude of species, from Damara Dik Dik to Hippo, and in different scenarios for over 10 years successfully now. David has not stopped adding new innovative ideas and upgrading his manufacturing equipment and technology and is always open to discussing potential improvements or additions to his range of darts.

Motsumi Darts manufactures and supplies marking vaccination darts we use for rabies vaccination of kudu from a helicopter, and sells some of the best blind folds, carry mats, prodders, rifle scopes, and other related equipment, allowing for a convenient one-stop shop of darting and game capture equipment. I am looking forward to receiving my Motsumi Sanna Remote Projector, which I believe will be an improvement on other projectors available currently.

World Elephant Day – Precision for Conservation

Today, on World Elephant Day, we celebrate one of the world’s most iconic and intelligent species — and the people working tirelessly to protect them.

At Motsumi Darts, we’re proud to support wildlife veterinarians, rangers, and conservationists with specialised darting equipment designed for safe and effective elephant management. Whether for veterinary treatment, collaring, or relocation, precision and animal welfare are always our top priorities.

Every tool we produce is part of a bigger mission: giving wildlife professionals the confidence to act, and elephants the chance to thrive.

All in a weekend’s work for Dr Max of Motsumi Darts.

He recently completed wildlife capture and translocation operations — tasks that require precision, careful planning, and a deep commitment to animal welfare.

Each animal was safely relocated to its new habitat, helping to protect biodiversity and ensure healthy populations.

That’s conservation in action.

World Lion Day 2025

Africa’s lions are more than just a symbol of the wild — they are key to keeping our ecosystems in balance.

From collaring for research to relocations that protect vulnerable prides, every dart we supply is part of a bigger story: ensuring these magnificent predators have a safe and thriving future.

Today, we honour the teams working tirelessly in the field and the lions they protect. Here’s to keeping the pride alive.

Meet Dr Maximilian Krings – Wildlife Veterinarian at Motsumi Darts

We’re proud to welcome Dr Max Krings to the Motsumi Darts and Motsumi Wildlife team — a dedicated wildlife veterinarian with a deep passion for conservation, fieldwork, and practical veterinary application.

Originally from northern Namibia, Dr Max grew up on a farm where his love for wildlife and nature took root. He went on to earn his Veterinary Science degree from the University of Pretoria in 2022.

His journey in wildlife health began at the Cheetah Conservation Fund, where he contributed to critical research and clinical care. He then completed his community service year with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, gaining hands-on experience in the immobilisation and management of iconic African species. His work included collaring lions, wild dogs, and cheetahs, mass capture of antelope, and large-scale rhino dehorning operations.

Dr Max has worked alongside key conservation organisations including African Wildlife Vets (AWV), WWF, BRREP, EWT, and the Black Rhino Conservation Project. He recently completed an internship in Anaesthesiology at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital, refining his skills in sedation, monitoring, and pain management.

At Motsumi, Dr Max plays a central role in:
Product testing and technical development of darting equipment
Practical training and field demonstrations with clients and partners
Wildlife immobilisation and translocation
Biological sample collection for diagnostics and research
On-site veterinary treatment and emergency response

Whether it’s darting in the bush, guiding clients in the field, or ensuring that every product meets professional field standards, Dr Max embodies the practical, skilled, and science-based approach that defines Motsumi Darts.

Please join us in welcoming him to the team!

Practice Makes Precision!

Our visiting Canadian veterinary technicians got the chance to test their skills on the range — practicing gun handling with clay pigeons!

While darting wildlife in the field requires calm nerves and clinical accuracy, training like this builds the confidence and coordination needed for safe, effective work in real-life conservation scenarios.

From clay pigeons to conservation — it’s all about preparation, precision, and respect for the animals we aim to protect.

World Nature Conservation Day

Today, we reflect on the importance of protecting the natural world — not just for us, but for every species that shares this planet.

Working closely with wildlife veterinarians, rangers, and conservationists, we’ve seen firsthand how fragile ecosystems can be — and how powerful human action can become when driven by purpose. From the quiet moments tracking a herd, to the high-stakes rescue of endangered animals, every effort counts.

Nature conservation isn’t just about preserving landscapes — it’s about giving wildlife a future.

At Motsumi Darts, we are proud to play a small part in these efforts. But the real heroes are those in the field, working daily to protect the wild.
