IS YOUR FRENCHIE’S BREATHING REALLY “NORMAL”?

Frenchies are famous for their snorts, snores and funny little breathing noises. ❤️

But there’s an important distinction between a characteristic of the breed and a sign that your dog is struggling to breathe.

Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) can affect French Bulldogs and may significantly impact their quality of life.

Loud breathing, poor exercise tolerance, excessive panting, difficulty breathing and collapse are some of the signs owners should never simply dismiss as “that’s just what Frenchies sound like.”

Swipe through this carousel to learn what to look out for.

🚨 If your Frenchie is struggling to breathe, has blue/grey gums or tongue, or collapses, seek veterinary attention immediately.

The goal isn’t to make every Frenchie silent. The goal is to make sure every Frenchie can breathe comfortably. 💙

🐾 BRINGING HOME A FRENCHIE PUPPY? SAVE THIS!

Those little ears, wrinkles and oversized personalities are hard to resist — but bringing a French Bulldog puppy home comes with plenty of responsibility too. 💕

The first few months are the perfect time to establish healthy habits that can benefit your Frenchie for years to come.

From vaccinations and parasite prevention to nutrition, dental care, socialisation and learning what normal breathing looks like for your puppy, there’s a lot to think about!

We’ve put together a simple checklist to help new Frenchie parents get started.

🐾 10 FRENCHIE HEALTH PROBLEMS EVERY OWNER SHOULD KNOW

French Bulldogs may be small, but they certainly come with a BIG personality — and, unfortunately, they can also come with some breed-specific health challenges.

From their breathing and skin to their ears, eyes, spine and weight, understanding what your Frenchie may be predisposed to can help you recognise problems early and seek veterinary care when it's needed.

And here's the important part: not every Frenchie will develop these problems. Knowing the risks simply means you're better prepared to look after your individual dog.

Swipe through our top 10 and save this post for later. 💙

How We Became "The Frenchie Clinic"

We honestly don't know who started it. 😂

Some time ago, we began receiving calls from new clients saying things like:
💬 "Hi! We've heard you're the Frenchie clinic..."

At first, we smiled and wondered where they'd heard that. Then it happened again. And again. Before long, it became a regular occurrence. French Bulldog owners from all over Pretoria were telling us that friends, breeders, neighbours and fellow Frenchie lovers had recommended Value Vets as "the Frenchie clinic."

It wasn't a title we gave ourselves — it was one our clients gave us.

And we couldn't be more honoured. 😇

Over the years, we've had the privilege of caring for hundreds of French Bulldogs. We've celebrated puppy vaccinations, guided first-time Frenchie owners, treated itchy skin and stubborn ear infections, managed complex breathing and spinal conditions, performed surgeries, supported rehabilitation, and shared in countless happy, healthy moments.

French Bulldogs are a truly special breed. They're affectionate, hilarious, stubborn, expressive and full of personality — but they also have unique healthcare needs. Understanding those needs and helping Frenchies live their happiest, healthiest lives has become something we're genuinely passionate about.

So, while we may never know who first called us "the Frenchie Clinic," we'd like to say thank you:
🤍 Thank you to every client who has trusted us with their Frenchie.
🤍 Thank you for recommending us to your friends and family.
🤍 And thank you for allowing us to do what we love every single day.

Welcome to Frenchie Month at Value Vets. 🐾

📸 Share your favourite Frenchie photo in the comments (yes, we know it's impossible to choose just one!)

And while you're here, tag a fellow Frenchie owner and invite them to join the fun. Let's see just how many Frenchies are part of our amazing community! 🌟

Not every lump is harmless.

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is:
"It's probably just a fatty lump."

While many lumps are completely benign, mast cell tumours are one of the most common skin cancers in dogs, and they can look almost identical to harmless lumps.

The good news? A simple Fine Needle Aspirate (FNA) can often provide valuable information quickly and help us decide on the best treatment plan.

If you've noticed a new lump on your pet — no matter how small — don't wait for it to grow.

🤫 PET CONFESSIONS FRIDAY! 🐾

It's a safe space... we promise. 😅

We know your pets aren't always the perfect angels they pretend to be at the vet...

So tell us:

🐾 What's the naughtiest thing your pet has ever done?

Did they...
🐶 Eat the couch?
🐱 Knock your TV off the cabinet?
🧦 Steal socks?
🍗 Counter-surf an entire roast chicken?
💩 Roll in something they definitely shouldn't have?

We want to hear your funniest (or most unbelievable!) pet confession.

👇 Share your story in the comments.

📸 Bonus points if you include a photo of the guilty party — we'd love to see the face behind the crime! 😂

We'll be choosing our favourite confession to feature in next week's Pet Confessions Friday (with your permission, of course!).

Your dog vomits and your heart drops, but is it actually an emergency? The answer depends on more than you might think.

Most dog owners don't realise there's a big difference between vomiting, regurgitation and retching. Each one points to a different part of the digestive system and knowing which one you're dealing with can change everything about how you respond.

The colour and contents of the vomit also matter. Yellow bile, white foam, bloody vomit or vomit that looks like coffee grounds, each one tells a different story.

Our latest article, written by Dr Falon Olfsen from Value Veterinary Clinic, breaks it all down clearly and calmly so you know exactly what to watch for.

Has your dog ever vomited in a way that worried you?
What did you do first?
