As we count down the final days of 2025, we are eternally grateful for the privilege of serving the many animals who passed through our doors, as well as the community animals and those within our reach who needed our help. Every life touched reminds us why we do what we do.

We are able to continue this work because of kindness passed on — through donations, through like-hearted people, and through organisations that stood alongside us so that so many animals could be given a second chance at experiencing a home filled with love and care. We are especially thankful to our funders who donated specifically towards the sterilisation of community animals. Because of your generosity and shared vision for a better future, 772 animals were sterilised through our sterilisation projects this year, changing countless lives for the better.

Our deepest gratitude goes to our veterinarians and staff, who have worked tirelessly with unwavering kindness and compassion. This is felt even more during the holiday period, when our waiting room is filled throughout the day. Every case is approached as a new challenge — a challenge not only to restore health, but often dignity as well. Thank you for treating every animal as an individual and never just a number, and for pouring care into each and every soul that passes through your clinic, even when no one is watching.

As we step into a new year, we wish all our clients, supporters, and donors a prosperous and happy New Year. Thank you for being part of this journey and for making hope possible for so many animals.

🐍 An Unusual Visitor at Our Hospital Today 🐍

Today we had a very unusual guest arrive at our hospital — a beautiful Dumeril's boa that was found in the community where children were playing with it. Concerned for both the safety of the children and the wellbeing of the snake, the animal was carefully secured in a ventilated bucket to reduce stress and prevent injury. We then ensured its safe and responsible transport to the SPCA Wildlife Unit, where it will receive the appropriate care and be assessed.

This serves as an important reminder that wildlife should never be handled and that trained professionals should always be contacted when wild animals are found in the community.

A heartfelt thank you to MSD South Africa for their incredible kindness and swift support for Night, a beloved dog from our community who desperately needed help with her skin.

Night’s owner loves her deeply, but he was worried and unsure of what was causing her ongoing skin problem. He reached out to us for help, and we immediately arranged to collect both him and Night so she could be seen and treated at our hospital.

When it became clear that he was not in a position to afford the product she needed, we reached out to MSD Animal Health — and their response was immediate and compassionate.

They generously donated a Bravecto (Bravecto South Africa) to assist Night on her healing journey, bringing comfort to her and relief to her devoted owner. We are forever grateful for your support.

Your kindness changes lives — not only for the animals, but for the people who love them. Thank you. 💙🐾

A heartfelt thank you to Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and the City of Cape Town for the generous funding towards the sterilisation, vaccination, and deworming of 222 animals in the Athlone area.

The impact of this sterilisation project, supported through the Mayor’s Fund, has been tremendous. By preventing future unwanted litters, we are taking meaningful steps in the ongoing fight against animal neglect and abuse. Your commitment has brought real, lasting change to the lives of these animals and the community around them.

Thank you for making a difference. Your support is helping to create a kinder, healthier future for animals in need. 🐾✨

We’re saddened to report two incidents in which a dog was shot with a rubber bullet (within a space of a week). One dog was injured in the shoulder and the other in the face, and both were left with significant wounds that required stitches.

Despite what they’ve been through, both dogs are incredibly sweet and didn’t deserve to be caught in the middle of a human conflict. We’re grateful they received the care they needed, and we wish them both a smooth and speedy recovery.

Today, the PDSA stands in unity with the Women for Change movement, dressing in black to show our unwavering support for the fight against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF). As an organisation deeply committed to protecting the well-being of animals, we recognise that the fight for justice and equality does not stop at the human species. We acknowledge the disturbing links between GBVF and animal cruelty, and we believe in advocating for a world where all beings—human and animal alike—can live free from harm.

The Women for Change movement has been a powerful voice for the protection of women, and as part of a broader society, we must stand alongside them, amplifying their call for safety, justice, and an end to the violence that disproportionately affects women and girls. Yet, this fight is not just about human rights; it’s also about understanding how abuse against humans often correlates with cruelty towards animals.

Research has shown a deeply troubling connection between perpetrators of GBVF and those who abuse animals. The abuse of animals can often be a precursor to violent behavior toward humans, and vice versa. This is why, as an organisation dedicated to animal welfare, the PDSA is committed to speaking out on this important intersection. We cannot turn a blind eye to the cycles of violence that impact both women and animals.

Our message is clear: Gender-based violence, in all its forms, is unacceptable. Animal cruelty, as a form of abuse, must also be recognised as a serious issue that affects all aspects of society. By connecting these two causes, we strengthen the movement for change, calling for a world where compassion, respect, and justice reign supreme—for women, for animals, and for all.

Together, we stand for a better future. Together, we demand change.

Today we witnessed the most heartwarming sight. A stray mama dog was brought in — she had just given birth to one tiny puppy. We suspected she was either still in labour or that more pups were on the way but couldn’t be born.

What moved us most was her unwavering protection of her pup. The single puppy she had brought into the world remained gently cradled in her mouth, sheltered and safe. In her eyes, there was no fear, no thought of herself — only the instinct to protect her baby at all costs.

It’s moments like these that remind us how deep and pure a mother’s love can be — no matter the species. Animals have so much to teach us about compassion, courage, and unconditional love. 💕
