Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) is a serious autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys its own red blood cells. As red blood cells are lost, pets develop anemia, meaning they don't have enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body. About 75% of IMHA cases are primary (idiopathic), meaning no underlying cause can be identified. Other cases, called secondary IMHA, can develop as a result of infections, inflammatory diseases, cancer, or other conditions that affect the immune system.

Pets with IMHA may show a variety of signs, including lethargy, weakness, loss of appetite, rapid breathing, vomiting, diarrhea, pale gums, blood in the urine or stool, or even collapse.

IMHA is diagnosed using a combination of physical examination, bloodwork, and additional tests such as a Saline Agglutination Test (SAT). In the first image, a drop of blood is mixed with saline. In pets with IMHA, the red blood cells clump together (autoagglutinate), which can often be seen with the naked eye. The second image shows what a normal sample looks like, with the red blood cells remaining evenly dispersed.

IMHA is a medical emergency. Prompt treatment is essential and often includes hospitalization, medications to suppress the immune system, supportive care, and, in severe cases, blood transfusions!

Your dog’s nose should lead the adventure, not their tongue! 🐶

It’s normal for dogs to sniff the world around them, but repeatedly licking the ground, grass, puddles, or objects during walks can expose them to harmful substances. If your dog constantly licks everything on walks or suddenly starts excessive licking outdoors, it may be worth mentioning to your veterinarian.

What looked like a small wound turned out to be much more than meets the eye. 🐱

George, a 10-month-old neutered indoor/outdoor cat, came to Furgent Care because his family noticed he wouldn’t stop licking a wound on his side. At home, he was otherwise acting completely normal. During his exam, our team discovered that the injury was much more extensive than it appeared. George was sedated so his wounds could be thoroughly cleaned and repaired, helping prevent a serious infection.

Cats are experts at hiding pain, and even when they seem perfectly fine, a seemingly minor wound can quickly become a medical emergency. Without prompt treatment, George’s injuries could have become infected and potentially life-threatening. The good news? Thanks to his family’s quick action, along with pain medication, antibiotics, and wound care, George is expected to make a full recovery and get back to being a happy, playful cat!

If you notice a wound, swelling, excessive licking, or any change in your pet’s behavior, don’t wait to have it evaluated. Early treatment can make all the difference!

Happy National Kitten Day!

Today, we're celebrating all the tiny purrs, playful pounces, and whiskered mischief that make kittens so special. 💙

As cute as they are, kittens are also incredibly curious, which means they're experts at getting into things they shouldn't. That's why it's so important to kitten-proof your home and know when something isn't quite right. Keep an eye out for signs that your kitten may need veterinary attention, including:
-Not eating or drinking
-Vomiting or diarrhea
-Extreme lethargy
-Trouble breathing
-Trouble using the litter box
-Swallowing something they shouldn't have
