One animal at a time. Connect with us on social - learn more about guidelines at hssw.org/socialmedia

Founded in 1897, the Humane Society for Southwest Washington is the largest and oldest animal welfare organization in Southwest Washington. HSSW is an independent nonprofit with campuses in Vancouver and Longview, Washington. Each year, HSSW cares for thousands of pets. We provide shelter to lost and stray animals, a refuge from abuse and neglect, essential medical care, and a lifesaving second chance. Our commitment to the pets and people of Southwest Washington extends beyond the shelter, providing critical support to pets and families with Wellness Clinics, pet food assistance, spay/neuter, emergency boarding, financial assistance, and other programs that help keep families together. We also own and operate ReTails Thrift Store. Giving new life to gently-used items, every purchase and donation at ReTails supports our lifesaving work with the animals. Some puzzles are hard to solve. Rubix Cube isn’t one of them🧩 She’s affectionate, asks for pets, sits nicely for treats, and loves to be on the go. Her ideal match is an active person or family who can help her burn off energy, with no other dogs at home. Bonus: her adoption fee has already been sponsored by someone who believes in her!

“Whoever takes him home will be very lucky.”

That’s what one of our volunteers said after spending the afternoon with Porter, and we couldn’t agree more💛 Porter is a 6-year-old pup who is a huge fan of toys, from tug-of-war ropes to busy boxes and everything big and small in between! He’ll happily play with them all and proudly show you his entire collection😉

With Aussie and German shepherd in the mix, Porter has a busy brain and energy to match. He’s hoping for an active family or adventure partner who’ll keep him moving with long walks, puzzle toys, and plenty of training games.

Ready for the perfect sidekick with brains and heart? Learn more about Porter at hssw.org/dogs

Spooky season? More like snuggly season🖤

Today is National Black Cat Day and we’re celebrating by showing you some of the amazing black cats here at the shelter who are ready and waiting for their snuggle partner☺️

We know some folks worry about black cats being adopted around Halloween, and we love that you care. The good news is that animal welfare experts have found no evidence these cats face more danger in October. Our adoption team gets to know every adopter the same careful way all year, so these cats can go home whenever their perfect match walks in.

A huge thank you to Team Depot for spending Monday with us at our Vancouver Campus🧡

The Home Depot volunteers rolled up their sleeves for a huge campus clean-up! While they were here, our Facilities Technician, Kevin, got to show off the $5,000 specialty plumbing tool The Home Depot Foundation generously funded through a grant. This tool means we can now handle plumbing work in-house, saving thousands of dollars that can go right back to the animals in our care🔧

Happy Tails to Supreme Cat of the United States (Scotus) and Taco Bell Beefy Five-Layer Burrito (Beef)! Check out this great update from the owner of these two cats, formerly known at the shelter as Lynx and Cascade.

"I met Supreme Cat of the United States (Scotus) at the Kitty Palooza event in 2025. I wasn’t looking to adopt any specific kitten, but he became my best friend that day. He had a LOT to say, was very confident in his new environment, and I could just tell he would keep life interesting. When I went back one year later to adopt Taco Bell Beefy Five-Layer Burrito (Beef), I thought he was the cutest baby ever. He was very fluffy and had that really cute kitten stare, as if he were shocked by his own existence. He was immediately very playful, but also receptive to affection. Both of them brought the exact type of energy I was looking for at the time of adoption.

Both cats are doing amazing! They settled in very quickly and are now best friends. Scotus spends his days sunbathing on windowsills and committing theft (it’s okay, I forgive him). Beef is my adventure cat and enjoys going on coffee runs in his bubble backpack. They are very good around people and other cats, which has led me to try fostering kittens. Overall, they’ve been the perfect additions to my family.

What I love most about Scotus is how affectionate he is. He is always ready to join me for a nap, especially when he gets to be the little spoon. I also love how vocal he gets when he wants attention or to keep me on schedule (he will never let me forget about feeding time or bedtime). What I love most about Beef is that, despite having grown so much since I adopted him, he still acts like a baby. He has kept all the cute kitten habits he had back in May, and I hope it never ends. I also love how relaxed he is in any situation. I can handle him, take him on adventures, or do just about anything else, and he will never complain, opting to purr instead.

My pets are my family and closest friends. They keep me grounded and happy. I can’t imagine what life would be like without them."
