As many of you may know, this Friday we will be saying "see you later" to one of our wonderful veterinarians, Dr. Laura Maher.
Dr. Maher has made an incredible impact on A&E Animal Hospital through her compassion, dedication, and outstanding patient care. Her thorough approach to medicine and genuine kindness have earned the trust of our clients, the love of our patients, and the admiration of our entire team.
To our clients and patients—thank you for allowing Dr. Maher to be part of your pets' lives. We know many of you will miss her just as much as we will. While we're sad to see her go, we couldn't be more excited for her next adventure. We know that wherever life takes her, she'll continue to make a difference in the lives of animals and the people who love them.
Dr. Maher, thank you for everything you've brought to A&E. You'll always be a part of our family, and we wish you nothing but happiness and success in this exciting new chapter.

Thank you all so much for the kind messages, comments, and congratulations after my 20 year anniversary post. Reading your words has truly meant a lot to me!

It's hard to believe that 20 years have gone by so quickly, but one thing has remained constant— the wonderful relationships I’ve had the privilege of building with so many of you and your pets.

Your trust, loyalty, and support over the years have made this a wonderful place to work. Thank you for allowing me to do what I love every day. I'm grateful for each and every one of you and look forward to many more years together!

🐾 Holiday celebrations and storm season can be a challenging time for many pets. If your furry family member becomes anxious during fireworks, thunderstorms, or other loud events, we encourage you to reach out early to discuss whether anxiety medication may be helpful.

🎆⛈️ We often receive an increased number of medication requests before holidays and severe weather. Contacting us ahead of time helps ensure we have ample time to review your pet's needs and prepare any necessary prescriptions before the event arrives.

📋 As required by law, pets must have had an examination with one of our veterinarians within the past 12 months for us to prescribe medication. If your pet is due for an exam, we'd be happy to help get them scheduled.

📞 Give us a call or send us a text to discuss the best options for keeping your pet comfortable and safe.

As we remember and commemorate our fallen soldiers, we want to wish everyone a safe and happy Memorial Day. 🕊️

Please note that A&E Animal Hospital is closed today, Monday, May 25th, in observance of the holiday. We will reopen tomorrow, Tuesday, May 26th at 7:30 AM. 🗓️🐾

If you are celebrating with a backyard barbecue today, please keep a close eye on your furry family members! Many holiday favorites can be dangerous for pets. 🌭🍔

🚫 Backyard BBQ Hazards to Avoid:
Bones & Meat Scraps: Cooked bones can splinter and cause internal blockages or tears. Fatty scraps can trigger painful pancreatitis.

Onions, Garlic, & Chives: Highly toxic to both dogs and cats. Watch out for these in salads, burger toppings, and marinades.

Grapes & Raisins: Can cause sudden kidney failure in dogs. Keep fruit plates out of reach!

Chocolate, Xylitol, & Alcohol: Desserts and sugar-free treats containing xylitol (an artificial sweetener) are highly dangerous.

If your pet requires urgent medical attention while we are closed, please contact the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital Emergency Service in Urbana immediately. They are open 24/7.

With the Illinois Marathon taking place this past weekend, we couldn’t resist celebrating one of our very own patients who continues to make headlines… 🐕🏃‍♂️

Meet Chex — a true local legend and proud patient of A & E Animal Hospital!

During the Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon, Chex decided he didn’t want to just watch the runners… he wanted to be one! After breaking free from home last year, he joined the marathon course, ran alongside participants, and even crossed the finish line at Memorial Stadium.

And believe it or not… he did it again this year!!! 😄

His owners, Ed & Laura Weiskamp, let us know that Chex’s chain broke at the race, and before anyone knew it, he was off running with the crowd and completed the race once more. Talk about dedication!

Chex has officially earned his title as the most unforgettable “runner” the race has ever seen — and honestly, we think he deserves a medal every year 🥇

We are so proud to care for such an incredible, spirited patient. Way to go, Chex! 💙

It’s been a busy season here at A&E Animal Hospital. While we’ve been quiet on our social media, the team has been hard at work behind the scenes. A huge shoutout goes to the current crew, who truly are the heartbeat of this clinic!
