Please welcome Dr. Emily Shilling as our 2026-2027 intern veterinarian!

A southern Illinois native, Dr. Shilling has been caring for horses since she could walk. As an avid equestrian and recent graduate of the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, she is excited to continue her journey with Midwest Equine.

Her background in the equestrian sport of eventing piqued her interest in sports medicine, and lameness prevention and treatment, with a focus on proper hoof care.

Off the clock, she can be found working with her new young thoroughbred gelding, whom she hopes to train and take up through the levels of eventing.

We are excited to welcome Dr. Delight Grimes to Midwest Equine as a full-time clinician!

Read on about Dr. Grimes and how she got to MWE:

Dr. Delight Heaven Grimes was born in Lewisville, Texas, but spent most of her formative years overseas. Growing up in Honduras, Venezuela, Israel, and Mexico taught her to adapt quickly to new cultures and environments. In her childhood, Dr. Grimes discovered her passion for sports and her love of animals. She particularly loved basketball which she parlayed into a university basketball scholarship at a veterinary school in Mexico, where she graduated in 2024.

After veterinary school, Dr. Grimes completed a yearlong internship at Montana Equine. Realizing Montana winters were not for her, she headed to Illinois for a second equine medicine and surgery internship at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The cornfields won her over, and after completing her internship in June 2026, she quickly joined the Large Animal Clinic faculty as a full-time equine primary care veterinarian in July. Although, Dr. Grimes is well versed and interested in all aspects of equine medicine, her true love lies in dentistry! Routine floats, advanced odontoplasty, extractions, if it involves horses’ teeth, Dr. Grimes is all in. So, if you ever see her without her trusty dental mirror, you can be sure it’s probably not far behind!
