We just welcomed 30 cats from Texas!

drove all the way from the outskirts of Houston to give 5 adults cats, 24 “musher” kittens, and one older kitten better chances at finding homes.

It was an eventful Thursday morning at HSSA, loud with the mews of kittens who had clearly had more than enough time in the car. Our staff worked quickly to examine every kitty and get them to comfortable kennels where they happily chowed down.

Some of the cats are already up for adoption, but our new “mushers” will go to foster for a little while. Musher kittens are still transitioning to solid food and are too small for spay/neuter surgery. But they’ll be ready to meet their adoring public soon!

We’re so grateful to Brazoria County SPCA for partnering with us and going the distance for pets in need! 🚘

Florence Copper Community Foundation stopped by this week to present a check and see their impact in action.

Their ongoing support helps us take in pets from Pinal County Animal Care and Control, including pets with significant medical needs like our first Max’s MASH Unit patient, Basil.

Thank you, Florence Copper Community Foundation!

Ladies, if he…

- loves to cuddle
- came all the way from New Mexico to meet you
- knows his way around a ping pong ball

Then that’s not your man (yet), it’s Nelson! This 8-year-old lovebug wants nothing more than to be by your side. If you take him home, Nelson will be a sweet and steady presence in your life 💕

Thanks to for providing an essential to our shelter cats like Nelson!

Cote’s summer plans? Taking refreshing dips and lounging poolside with a few treats. If you adopter her, she’ll show you how to take advantage of the best parts of the season!

This 3-year-old Chocolate lab mix is an expert at more than splashing—she has many commands in her repertoire, including: sit, down, speak, paw, and roll over! On top of that, Cote is good with kids and already housetrained, so she’d fit in perfectly with a family.

Stop by this weekend to meet this smart swimmer! 💙

After being hit by a car, Basil was taken to Pinal County Animal Care where his condition declined rapidly. Without a full-time vet, Basil’s growing care needs presented a problem for Pinal County Animal Care, so they called HSSA for help.

We had just finished construction on Max’s MASH Unit, an in-shelter intensive care unit designed for this exact purpose. With this space at our disposal, we said yes to our partner shelter and took in sweet Basil.

He arrived a little wobbly and quickly became nonresponsive. But with tests, fluids, medication, time, and care, Basil stabilized. He has since made a fully recovery and found a loving home, where he has a new name: Romeo!

Our supporters make stories like this possible. With help from our community, we can bring pets back from the brink and set them up for happy lives. Make a gift today to change the next pet’s future!

Jerry loved his vacation from the shelter. He liked it so much that decided to go sightseeing all on his own after escaping his foster’s yard.

His walking tour of Tucson ended 1.5 miles away on a resident’s porch. They lured him in with salmon and he made himself at home, snuggling up to his new friend on their couch.

Because Jerry’s foster had posted him on Petco Love Lost with our help, the finder was able to get in touch quickly. This is exactly why we recommend Petco Love Lost to people who’ve lost or found pets. The centralized database is used by shelters and individuals across the country, making it the best way for pets and people to reunite!

Jerry is safely back at the shelter now, but he’s still looking for a place to call home. Stop by to greet this sweet, 3-year-old Jack Russell Terrier mix who has never met a stranger!

This Old Dog (and these two puppies) spent Friday with Mac DeMarco!

We so appreciate the team inviting us to be a part of Mac’s Tucson performance at Linda Ronstadt Music Hall. The tour got some much-needed downtime with Pablo and his two puppy friends in a green room before the show, and concertgoers learned about fostering with HSSA.

Even an evening away makes a big difference for shelter pets—email [email protected] to get started and make your own lifelong fans! 🤩

Staff and volunteers have spent weeks trying to get Obsidian to open up to people. With lots of patience and treats, we saw a little progress. Instead of hiding 24/7, he’d hang out in his cat tree—that is, until the adoptions lobby opened.

We thought he might be more “elusive roommate” than “best friend.” We were wrong!

Obsidian went to foster over the weekend, where he has proven to be extremely sweet and cuddly. He is glued to his foster’s side, even climbing up on her shoulder. After a slow introduction, he and the resident cat are playing and zooming around the house together.

Bring 4-year-old Obsidian home so he can keep living his best life! 🖤

Not only has Max’s MASH Unit enhanced our critical care, ongoing care for shelter pets has gotten easier too!

This week, we used the space to check on 7-year-old Precious’ eye ulcer. To see how the wound is healing, our team uses a special dye called fluorescein. The dye glows under UV light, revealing scratches or foreign bodies in the eye.

This clinic has changed the game for HSSA pets and shelter staff. We’re so grateful for the generosity that made Max’s MASH Unit possible, including a $5,000 grant from

Stepping up to help during the Bain Fire

Yesterday, we took in 19 pets from Riverside County Department of Animal Services. We’ve worked together for a little while now, but this transfer was different than what came before.

As the Bain Fire grew, Riverside County’s largest animal shelter found itself inside the evacuation zone. Staff were committed to getting these pets to safety. That meant making space at their other locations, and fast.

So they called us, and we were glad to take in their pets during this difficult time. We’re so inspired by ’ tireless work to get through the Bain Fire.

Many of our new furry friends from California are already up for adoption. We know they’ll find peace with local families soon!
