Shadow is as gentle as the sky fading purple as day turns to night 💙💜

This senior dog’s calming presence has made her popular company around our office. But she’s not without her quirks! She stands on her hind legs to watch her friends check the mail and joins in with a hearty howl when an ambulance passes by.

Shadow came to us with her sister Sandy after their owner passed. Sandy found a family, but Shadow is still waiting for her home.

Will you take home Shadow and her study in blue? Her fee is waived as part of the Pawcasso Adoption Special!

Pictured here: Karlo Gus deliberating over whether his masterpiece is complete.

And that's the same level of attention he brings to his people! He loves pets, meeting new friends, and giving big bear hugs. Skilled with tricks like sit, stay, and leave-it, Karlos Gus is the total package.

As part of our Pawcasso Adoption Special, it’s free to take home this sweet boy and his incredible painting—you can admire it together!

It’s National Veterinary Technician Week!

Veterinary techs are the heartbeat of veterinary medicine, and especially shelter medicine. Serving thousands of pets annually requires so much skill, adaptability, and nimbleness.

Last fiscal year, the hard work and expertise of our vet techs made it possible for us to administer 12,933 vaccines, spay/neuter 6,869 animals, and care for nearly 3,000 shelter pets.

Thank you to our vet techs for keeping pets healthy across our whole community—whether they’re community cats, owned pets, or pets still in search of a home!

Red is a shy and gentle giant, but this painting reveals the warmth that lies within him!

Despite being one of the biggest dogs we have at HSSA, he’s a dream on his leash. In addition to painting, he can sit, shake, and lay down on command. Oh, and he spins in a circle when he’s happy!

Take him and his painting home for free as part of our Pawcasso Adoption Special!

Transferred to us in the wake of the LA fires, Potato quickly won our hearts with his goofiness and boundless energy. He was doted on by staff and volunteers, becoming a frequent office visitor and even taking a Spaw Day trip to Rosie’s Barket.

While we knew Potato needed a special person who could match his energy, we were surprised at how long it was taking to find them. Then, one morning we got a call.

Late the night before, Jason was won over when he saw Potato’s online listing. He looked like the dog Jason had always dreamed he would have. And when they met in person, it was clear he had the personality to match!

As he filled out the paperwork, staff gathered in the adoptions lobby to witness this special moment and send Potato off with our love.

The next time you adopt, consider asking shelter staff which pets really need a chance. If you find the right fit in a pet like Potato, you’ll be so glad you did 💜

It was 110 degrees when senior dog Jerry was found in a hotel parking lot, panting and slurping water, his harness loose around his thin body. The women who found him had been displaced from their housing, but they couldn’t bear to leave him, so they brought him to us.

On closer inspection, we learned Jerry was also deaf, covered in tumors, and living with a heart mumur. Thanks to the supporters of our Second Chance Medical Fund, we could surgically remove the masses and prescribed medication to help him manage the murmur.

Moved by Jerry’s story, a potential adopter was determined to take him home, despite the cost of his care. Thanks to Second Chance Medical Fund donors, we could help the adopter pay for his medication during the transition, which meant Jerry could get adopted!

Thanks to our supporters, Jerry has found a new zest for life in his forever home, running down the hall and in the yard with energy we never saw in the shelter.

Help sick and injured pets like Jerry by making a gift to our Second Chance Medical Fund. When you give by Oct 31, your impact will be doubled thanks to an anonymous volunteer!

Cookie was so stressed we had to sedate him for his exam. His behavior made us wonder if he wasn’t socialized to people, but the fact that he was found outside in a carrier made it clear he had been somebody’s pet.

To help him decompress, we found a foster who was ready to meet his needs. And to everybody’s surprise, he crawled into her lap the very first night.

She writes, “He’s starting to purr and knead. He doesn’t really come out until night time, but if you grab him during the day, he’ll come and cuddle. He’s super sweet.”

Even a few days in foster can change a shelter pet’s life! Anybody can do it, and we provide all necessary supplies. We have a serious need for fosters right now, especially for dogs. If you’re interested, DM us your email to learn more!
