Could your pet survive the heat today?

Heat stroke can escalate quickly and become life threatening before you even realize something is wrong. In this video, Dr. White from Animal Emergency Clinic of Northeast walks through what to watch for and how to act fast.

Early signs can include heavy panting, excessive drooling, vomiting, lethargy, or trouble walking. Some pets are at higher risk, especially flat faced breeds like Bulldogs and Pugs, senior or overweight pets, and those with thick coats.

If you’re concerned, move your pet to a cool area, offer small amounts of water, and use cool not cold water to help bring their temperature down while you head in to see your local emergency care team.

Prevention goes a long way. Avoid peak heat hours, never leave pets in a car, and make sure they always have access to shade and water. If you think your pet may be experiencing heat stroke, seek emergency veterinary care immediately.

Most pets with arthritis don’t limp.

You might notice slowing down on walks, hesitation to jump, stiffness after rest, or just “not acting like themselves.” These small changes can be early signs of joint pain. The good news is there are ways to help support your pet’s comfort and mobility.

Have you noticed any of these changes in your pet? Let’s talk. Our team is here to help.

It’s heating up outside, and so are the risks for your pets.

As temperatures rise, we start to see more cases of heat exhaustion, and it can escalate quickly if you’re not watching for the signs. Panting is often the first clue, especially when your pet is struggling to cool themselves. You may also notice excessive drooling, bright red gums, vomiting, or weakness. If gums turn purple or gray, or your pet has trouble standing or collapses, it’s time for immediate emergency care.

If you notice any of these symptoms, get your pet out of the heat right away. Move them into shade or air conditioning, offer room temperature water, and avoid ice or very cold water, as that can make things worse.

Heat exhaustion can quickly turn into heat stroke, so acting early matters. If you suspect your pet is experiencing heat exhaustion, don’t wait. Seek emergency veterinary care right away.

Meet Jenna Mayer, Hospital Administrator at Eau Claire Animal Hospital in Wisconsin—someone who literally grew up inside the walls of the clinic she now leads. 🏥

From greeting clients by name to driving an elderly pet parent to the ER because he had no way to get there, Jenna leads with empathy, connection, and fierce dedication. She started as a receptionist nine years ago and now leads a high-performing, deeply rooted team with some members celebrating 10, 20, even 30 years at the hospital.

“I hope people remember my heart—that I poured everything into helping them grow and feel supported.” We’re proud to have Jenna as part of the Lakefield family.

For Jenna Mayer, veterinary medicine isn’t something she discovered—it’s something she grew up inside. Her mother, Jayne, was Eau Claire Animal Hospital’s (Eau Claire, WI) practice manager for 20 years and later owned the clinic prior to its transition to Lakefield. “I was raised here,” ...

Meet Vigo, our first Care Beyond Limits patient! Town and Country Animal Hospital recently helped the very first pet through Lakefield’s new Care Beyond Limits fund: a shoulder-riding, upside-down-snuggling cat named Vigo.

Vigo has battled painful stomatitis for years. When his pain and infection returned again, his family was facing financial hardship, including underemployment and being unable to qualify for standard financing support at the time. That’s when the fund stepped in, becoming the lifeline he needed to receive care and finally get relief.

He’s now recovering and back to what he does best: snuggling on shoulders and charming everyone he meets. This is exactly why Care Beyond Limits exists - to lift barriers when pets need care the most.

More stories to come. 💙🐾

20 New Beginnings start now.
Earlier this month, our PawDoc Surgery + Dental Center team began caring for 20 rescued Italian Greyhounds from a hoarding situation in Smith County, TX. PawDoc Surgery + Dental Center will provide complimentary spay/neuter procedures, dental cleanings, extractions, microchipping, and rabies vaccinations through the Care Beyond Limits Fund, a Lakefield-affiliated charitable program.
In partnership with the Italian Greyhound Rescue Foundation Texas & Oklahoma Chapter, these procedures will give each dog the healthy, happy start they deserve after surviving one of the largest hoarding cases in the region.
As Dr. Joyce Li of PawDoc Surgery + Dental Center shared, “This is more than a medical mission, it’s a story of hope, healing, and second chances.”
Follow along to see how their journey unfolds and visit Italian Greyhound Rescue Foundation Texas and Oklahoma for more information on adoption availability. From rescue to recovery, and soon, to forever homes, we are honored to be a part of their journey 🧡
