With warmer months upon us, we would like to remind pet parents that prevention is the key to a long healthy life. Fleas, ticks, heartworm and Leptospirosis are preventable. Living in the Pacific Northwest we recommend vaccinating against Leptospirosis and keeping your pets on a preventative year-round. Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that can damage to vital organs such as the liver and kidneys and is transmissible to humans. It is most commonly picked up by wildlife, and pets that spend time in and around the water are at higher risk for infection. Fleas and ticks carry a variety of different preventable diseases as well. Let's get outside and enjoy some sunshine with less worries! Call our office today to get your pet started on the Leptospirosis vaccine, pick up Simparica Trio (flea/tick/heartworm prevention) for canines, or Revolution Plus (flea/tick/heartworm prevention) for felines.

With Autumn upon us and the weather getting colder, we want to remind everyone that the American Heartworm Society recommends year-round heartworm protection. A recent survey revealed that states with historically low heartworm rates saw unexpected increases in heartworm positive cases. These included Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.
Heartworm disease is a year-round threat that has been diagnosed in all 50 states. This is a parasite that is transmitted to dogs and cats via infected mosquitos. It takes 6 months for the heartworm lifecycle to be complete and for adult worms to lodge within the chambers of the heart. Once in the heart, these worms cause major disease and can ultimately lead to the death of your pet.
Lilac City Veterinary Services recommends annual testing for heartworm disease and year-round protection with Simparica Trio for dogs and Revolution Plus for cats. Contact us today if you have questions or would like to get your pets started on their preventatives.
