Pet Safety reminder!! ☀️

🔥It may feel pleasant outside to you, but it could be too hot for their paws and bodies.
-At 85° air temperature, asphalt can reach 130°
-At 95° air temp, asphalt can hit 150° or more.
-That's hot enough to burn paw pads in less than a minute.

🐾Before your next walk, try the 7 second rule: Place the back of your hand on the asphalt for 7 seconds, if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your dog's paws.

💡Stick to early mornings or later evenings for walks.
💚Choose grassy areas or shaded paths.
👟 And don't forget dog booties for extra paw protection!

Rabies is a virus that affects the central nervous system and can be fatal if untreated. Any warm-blooded mammal, including humans, can get rabies. To help prevent pets’ contact with a bat:

-Bring pets into the house at night.
-Keep all doors and windows closed unless screened.
-Close pet doors to prevent pets from going outside or bringing a bat inside the house.

When bats are found on your property, contact SRHD at (509) 324-1560 ext. 7 and your health care provider when:

-People or pets have direct contact with the bat.
-A bat is found in a room or had access to a room with a sleeping person.
-A bat is found in a room with an unattended child.
-A bat is found in a room with a person under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or who has another sensory or mental impairment.

Bats are beneficial to the environment and should only be disturbed when they have been in contact with a person or animal. 🦇

Five Mile Pet Clinic will be open 8am-12pm on Thursday, July 3rd and we will be closed Friday July 4th to celebrate the holiday with our families. We will re-open on Monday, July 7th at 8am. It's Black Fly Season! 🦟🎯
Black fly bites are most commonly seen on the abdomen or the inside of the legs, where hair is sparse. They have a "bullseye" appearance, unlike tick bites, and range from pink to bright red.

While most bites are harmless and do not require veterinarian attention, excessive itching or swelling lasting more than 24-48 hours might need a vets attention. 🩺

✔️Tips to protect your pet:
Avoid walks near water during peak fly hours (late morning and early evening).
Use pet-safe insect repellants.
Keep outdoor pets in shaded or screened areas.
