🪥🐾 The Do’s & Don’ts of Brushing Your Pet’s Teeth 🐾🪥

Keeping your pet’s mouth healthy is one of the best ways to prevent dental disease. Here are some quick tips:

✅ Do’s:

👍DO Use Pet-Specific Toothpaste: Human toothpaste contains ingredients that are toxic to pets (like xylitol and fluoride). Always use toothpaste formulated for dogs and cats – they come in yummy flavors like poultry or seafood!
👍DO Make it Positive: Associate brushing with treats, praise, and gentle cuddles. Keep sessions short and stop if your pet shows signs of stress.
👍DO Start Early & Go Slow: The younger your pet is, the easier it will be to introduce tooth brushing. Start by letting them lick pet-specific toothpaste off your finger, then slowly introduce a finger brush or a soft pet toothbrush.
👍DO Look for Dental Chews & Diets: While not a substitute for brushing, veterinary-approved dental chews and prescription dental diets can help reduce plaque and tartar. Look for products with the VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Council) seal of acceptance.
👍DO Aim for Daily (or at least 3x/week): Consistency is key! The more frequently you brush, the more effective it will be.
👍DO Schedule Regular Vet Check-ups: Even with home brushing, regular professional dental cleanings under anesthesia are often necessary to address plaque below the gum line and identify other oral health issues. We can assess your pet's dental health and recommend the best plan!

❌ Don’ts:

👎DON'T Force It: If your pet is resisting strongly or showing signs of fear/aggression, stop the session. Forcing them can create a negative association and make future attempts harder. Try again later with more positive reinforcement, or speak to us for tips.
👎DON'T Use Human Toothpaste: As mentioned, human toothpaste is harmful to pets. Stick to veterinary-approved pet toothpastes only.
👎DON'T Ignore Bad Breath: Bad breath is almost always a sign of underlying dental disease, not just "dog breath." If you notice persistent bad breath, schedule an appointment with us to have your pet's teeth checked.
👎DON'T Give Up If It's a Struggle: While you should never force your pet, don't give up on the idea of home dental care entirely. Even if you can only manage a few teeth a day or have to use dental wipes, every little bit helps. You can work with your vet to find a routine that works for both of you!
👎DON'T Use Hard Bristled Brushes: Human toothbrushes or brushes with hard bristles can damage your pet's gums. Always use a soft-bristled pet toothbrush or a finger brush.
👎DON'T Skip Professional Cleanings: While home brushing is crucial, it often isn't enough to remove established tartar or address issues below the gum line. Regular professional dental cleanings by a veterinarian are essential for comprehensive oral health.

🐾 Keep Your Pet Itch-Free & Healthy! 🐾

Fleas and ticks aren’t just an annoyance — they can spread serious diseases to your pets and your family.

Why prevention matters:
✅ Year-round protection – Even in cooler months, these pests can survive indoors.

🚨Pet of the Month🚨

Meet Gunner 🐶 — this sweet pup had quite a scare when he managed to sneak a taste of rat poison. Rat bait can be extremely dangerous to pets, even in small amounts, so his family acted fast and brought him straight to us. 🚑

👩🏻‍⚕️We quickly confirmed the ingestion and administered activated charcoal to bind to the toxin and prevent it from entering his system. Buddy was monitored closely in the clinic, and thanks to his quick-thinking family and prompt treatment, he was able to go home the same day for continued monitoring. 💙

🚨 If your pet ever gets into rat poison:

•. Call the ASPCA pet poison control hotline immediately— their toxicologists specialize in guiding veterinary professionals on the safest and most effective treatment plans
• Visit us or an ER vet — do not wait for symptoms
• Bring the packaging with you if possible
• Early treatment can be lifesaving

We’re so glad Buddy is feeling well and back home where he belongs. 🐾❤️

☀️🐾 Summer Safety Alert for Pet Parents! 🐾☀️
Warm weather is here, and while it's a great time for outdoor fun, it can also pose hidden dangers for our furry friends. Here are 5 common summer hazards to watch out for:

1- Heatstroke 🌡
Try to walk pets during cooler hours, always provide lots of fresh water, and never leave them in the car. Watch out for heavy panting, weakness, drooling, and/or seizures
🚨Call us or bring in your pet immediately if you suspect heatstroke-- this is a veterinary emergency!🚨

2- Bugbites 🦟
Bees, ticks, and mosquitoes aren't just a nuisance—they can be dangerous. Bees can cause allergic reactions and swelling. Ticks and mosquitoes carry many blood-borne pathogens. Call us for safe insect repellents and preventatives!

3- Toxic Lawn & Garden Products 🌱
Many fertilizers, mulches, w**d killer, bug sprays, and lawn products can be dangerous. Keep pets away from treated lawns and prevent them from chewing on plants and mushrooms they may find outside.

4- Water Safety 🌊
While most animals can swim, most are not naturally good at it. Always have your pets wear life vests and make sure to clean them off after to avoid skin/ear infections. NEVER leave them alone by water!
🚨Call us or bring in your pet immediately if you suspect a near drowning-- this is a veterinary emergency!🚨

5- BBQs🍗
BBQs are lots of fun, but not for your pets! Many cookout foods have seasonings that are toxic to pets like onion and garlic. Other hazards at the BBQ can include bones, corn cobs, and skewers. Its best your furry friends aren’t invited to this years cookout.

Summer should be fun and safe for everyone—including your pets! 🐾
