Another reason to stay on monthly prevention: Hookworms -

a parasite that attaches its sharp hook like mouth parts to the intestinal wall and sucks blood. Causing: weight loss, bloody stools, anemia, and so much more.
Puppies are commonly affected but all ages of dogs and cats are susceptible.

Here is a great picture of an adult work with its blood sucking mouth parts from a stool sample of an adult dog that needed a blood tranfusion because of the severe infestation.
