🦷 What do vets truly look for when they “check teeth”? 🤔

Horses and donkeys are known as ‘hypsodonts’ which means that their teeth continually erupt throughout their entire life. Due to their upper jaw naturally being wider than their lower jaw, uneven wear of the teeth often occurs.

Uneven wear can lead to:
☑️ Sharp points ➡️ Cheek & tongue ulceration (cuts)
☑️ Inadequate chewing of food ➡️ Choke or Impaction Colic

It is recommended to have a veterinarian perform a dental exam on your horse annually to evaluate for these conditions. Because these are difficult to evaluate without a sedated oral exam, “checking teeth” simply helps us determine which horses may need to be addressed sooner rather than later. 🩺🐎🏔️

☀️ As the temperature rises, so does the risk for every horse owner’s biggest fear: colic. Dehydration, changing pasture dynamics & rising temperatures can quickly throw off your horse’s GI tract.

With that, one of the most important tools in a horse owner’s skillset is taking a TPR! Temperature, Pulse and Respiratory rate and evaluating gut sounds are all important vital signs to know how to do.

When to call your vet:
☑️ Temperature 101.5 or higher: this is a fever!
☑️ Resting Heart Rate 60 or higher.
☑️ Horses panting at rest, or resting respiratory rate over 30 per minute.
☑️ Signs of colic, or unable to hear gut sounds.

It’s not every day you get to snuggle a baby mini donkey! This guy was so cute and so was the rest of the herd. They all did great for their vaccines- Thanks for having us out!! 💙🐎🩺🏔️

This season we have seen a case of laminitis almost every day. “Laminitis” means inflammation of the laminae, an important velcro-like structure which adheres the dorsal aspect of the coffin bone to the hoof wall. When this structure is inflamed, it becomes week and can no longer counter balance the pull of the DDFT from the back side of the bone, leading to rotation. These are all different clinical signs and history that may mean your horse is having an episode of laminitis. This is an emergency, and is important to call your vet immediately to make a game plan if your horse is displaying a combination of these signs. 🩺🐎🏔️

Starting my career in mixed animal GP was the greatest gift I could have ever given myself, without even realizing it. I make great money for an equine vet in the first place but doing small animal relief has not only been enriching mentally but also has been freeing financially. If my body ever gives out, if I can no longer do equine medicine for whatever reason, I have a backup plan. I’d like to start posting more about finances and different ways to pay off student loans while still paying into your savings and retirement. I hope this is helpful and insightful and please let me know what questions you might have! 🐎🩺🐾💉🏔️

Student Loans seem like an insurmountable mountain when you graduate and not enough people talk about how to pay them off! I have learned a lot from the debt free vets FB group and after weighing options of going for forgiveness vs paying them aggressively I have decided (at least at this point in time) that I want to get rid of them as fast as possible. The key is to still set yourself up for a comfortable retirement and successful emergency savings at the same time! I’m hoping that this plan goes well, if anyone has additional advice I’m all ears. Specifically my next adventure will be figuring out how to file income as a business with my relief work. Leave any and all advice and questions below! 🐎🩺🏔️

I truly do love equine emergency cases, but man it is hard being on call! A lot of vets struggle with anxiety while being on call, anticipating what might call and when. And then it can be awful being on call overnight and then expected to still perform the next day as usual. How can we make this system better? Are emergency only practices the way of the future? 🤔🐎🩺🏔️
