Tule was happy to come in and donate blood. We are thankful for the donation and Tule was very happy to see Shaylee, one of our vet techs.
Just like people, animals need blood transfusions on occasion.
For dogs to be a donor, they need to be at least 50 pounds, in good health, not on any major medications and heartworm negative. Generally, by the time a dog is around 8 years old, we age them out of donating.
Dogs can donate every 12 weeks and between 250-450 ml are drawn at a time.
There are 2 main blood types; DEA 1.1 postive and negative. If an emergency, dogs can receive any type of blood without a reaction.
