🎆 Firework season is approaching! 🎇

Fireworks can be a source of stress and fear for many pets, but with a few thoughtful precautions, you can help keep them calm and secure. Here are some tips to ensure your furry friends stay safe and comfortable during firework season:

🎶🎧Create a Safe Space: Designate a quiet, comfortable area in your home where your pet can go to. This could be a room with few windows or a cozy corner with their favorite bed and toys. Consider playing calming music or white noise to help drown out the sound of fireworks.

Stay Indoors: Keep pets inside during firework displays. Even if they are normally outdoor pets, it’s safer to have them indoors where they feel more secure and are less likely to run away in fear.

Secure Windows and Doors: Make sure all windows, doors, and pet flaps are securely closed to prevent pets from escaping if they become frightened.

Update Identification: Ensure your pet’s ID tags and microchip information are current. In the unfortunate event that they do get lost, this will increase the chances of a quick reunion.

Provide Distractions: Offer toys or treats that can keep them occupied. Puzzle toys or chew toys can be great for distracting.

😌Stay Calm: Animals often take cues from their owners. Try to remain calm and reassuring, as your pet will pick up on your energy.

📞Consult Your Vet: If your pet has severe anxiety around fireworks, consult your veterinarian. We may recommend special treatments or temporary medication to help manage your pet’s stress.

By preparing in advance and providing a comforting environment, you can help your pet navigate firework season with greater ease and less fear.

Does your pet have seasonal allergies?

As the seasons change, so can the symptoms of allergies in pets, much like in humans. It’s important for pet parents to stay informed and proactive in managing their furry friend’s health during these times. Here are some things to consider:

🧐Recognize the Symptoms: Common signs of seasonal allergies in pets include excessive scratching, licking paws, red or inflamed skin/ears, sneezing, and watery eyes.

👀Identify the Allergens: Seasonal allergens such as pollen, mold, and dust mites can trigger allergic reactions in pets. Understanding what your pet is allergic to can help in minimizing exposure.

🛁Regular Grooming: Keeping your pet clean can help reduce allergens on their skin and coat. Regular baths with hypoallergenic or veterinarian prescribed shampoos can be beneficial, as can wiping down their paws and fur after outdoor activities.

🌎Environmental: Consider keeping windows closed during high pollen seasons and using air purifiers to reduce indoor allergens. Regularly changing air filters and vacuuming can also help maintain a low-allergen environment.

🍽️Diet and Supplements: Some pets benefit from a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which can help reduce inflammation and improve skin health. Some pets do well on prescribed diets.  Consult with your vet about dietary changes or supplements.

💊💉Medical Management: In some cases, your veterinarian may prescribe medications to help manage your pet’s allergy symptoms and keep your pet more comfortable.

👩‍⚕️🩺Regular Checkups: Keeping up with regular veterinary visits ensures that your pet’s allergies are being monitored and managed effectively. Your vet can also provide additional advice tailored to your pet’s specific needs.

By understanding and addressing your pet’s seasonal allergies, you can help ensure they remain comfortable and healthy throughout the changing seasons of the year.

💦 Subcutaneous fluids in pets can be a vital part of a treatment plan for various medical conditions. Administering fluids under the skin helps maintain hydration, especially in pets suffering from kidney disease, chronic dehydration, or other ailments that affect fluid balance.

This method is often used for cats and dogs, providing a way to deliver fluids when intravenous routes are not feasible or not necessary.

The process involves using a small needle to inject fluids into the subcutaneous space and are gradually absorbed into the bloodstream. Since they are gradually absorbed your pet may have a fluid filled lump where the fluids are administered between the shoulder blades. This fluid filled lump will go down as their body absorbs the fluids and can sometimes migrate down towards the animal’s chest. 💦

☀️Summer tip: Foxtails 🌾

If you’re a pet owner, it’s important to be aware of the potential dangers lurking in the great outdoors, especially during certain times of the year. One such hazard is the foxtail plant.

These plants, though common in many areas, can pose serious health risks to your pets.

Foxtails are a type of grass, they can easily attach to your pet’s fur and work their way into their skin, ears, eyes, nose, and even internal organs.

Once a foxtail attaches to your pet, it can migrate through the body, causing infections, abscesses, and other serious complications.

Watch out for👇🏼
* Persistent licking or biting at a specific area
* Swelling or redness at a specific area
* Sudden sneezing or pawing at the nose
* Head shaking/ head tilt or ear scratching
* Red, squinting, or swollen eyes

💡Prevention Tips💡
1. Avoid Foxtail Areas
2. Regular Grooming
3. Inspect After Walks
4. Maintained a clean yard. Free of foxtails.

Sweet Maple is currently undergoing a barium study to eliminate the possibility of a gastrointestinal foreign body.

🩻Barium study in dogs is a diagnostic procedure used to evaluate the gastrointestinal tract. This non-invasive test involves administering a barium sulfate suspension orally or via a feeding tube, which coats the lining of the stomach and intestines. As the barium moves through the digestive system, a series of X-rays are taken to monitor its progress and identify any abnormalities within the intestinal tract.

Sure, juggling barium is no walk in the park, but our tech wizards work their magic to keep it from turning our patient and themselves into an abstract art piece!

☀️The summer season is approaching, it is important to ensure your pet stays safe during the heat of the summer!

🥵Heatstroke in dogs is a critical emergency that occurs when a dog’s body temperature exceeds 104°F and they cannot regulate it.

👀 Symptoms to Watch For
* Excessive panting
* Reddened gums
* Tachycardia (rapid heart rate)
* Possible vomiting or diarrhea
* Leth or Weakness
* Muscle tremors or seizures
* Collapse

Heatstroke in dogs can be a serious and life-threatening condition, so it’s crucial to recognize the symptoms and act quickly.

If you suspect your dog is suffering from heatstroke, immediately move them to a cooler area, offer small amounts of water, and use cool, not cold, wet towels to help lower their body temperature. Avoid using ice-cold water as it can cause shock. Contact your veterinarian or head to the nearest animal emergency facility as soon as possible.

🗝️Prevention is key, so always provide plenty of water, shade, and breaks during outdoor activities and limit exercise during hot periods of the day. NEVER leave your dog unattended in a car or confined space no matter how long it will be. By staying vigilant and prepared, you can help protect your pet from the dangers of excessive heat.

Remember certain dog breeds, particularly those with short noses and faces, have a higher risk of developing heat stroke.
