🧐Myth Busters: Pet Edition! 🐾
We hear a lot of pet health myths/misconceptions in veterinary medicine — let’s clear some of those up!
❌ MYTH: “My pet is indoors, so they don’t need flea, tick, or heartworm prevention.”
✅ FACT: Fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes can still find their way indoors, putting indoor pets at risk too. 🦟 And in Texas especially, year-round prevention is essential.
❌ MYTH: “My dog is on heartworm prevention, so yearly testing isn’t necessary.”
✅ FACT: Annual heartworm testing is still extremely important, even for pets on prevention year-round. Prevention isn’t 100% foolproof if doses are missed, given late or not fully absorbed. Annual testing helps us catch any issues and keep your pet protected.
❌ MYTH: “My pet seems healthy/isn’t acting sick, so they don’t need bloodwork.”
✅ FACT: Pets are incredibly good at hiding illness. Routine bloodwork can help detect problems early — often before visible signs appear. Running bloodwork annually for your pet beginning at a young age allows us to establish a baseline for what is normal for them. Re-checking labs each year allows us to see any changes from the previous year-allowing us to treat issues sooner and improve long-term health.
Preventive care is one of the best ways to help pets live longer, healthier lives with the people who love them ❤️🐶🐱
