I never imagined that helping my four year-old prepare for our dogs. Passing would actually help me manage my own grief. After scheduling Clouse’s euthanasia, I told myself I’d do everything possible to help his passing not traumatize my kiddo. I’m grateful I’ve always been open and honest with him about death because the foundation was already set for these conversations to happen.

We made a big list of all the things Clouse would be able to do once he got to the rainbow bridge: run, jump, catch bumblebees, do parkour, fly, eat marshmallows… and most importantly we talked about Clouse being able to find our other pets who have passed.

Letting my kiddo be involved in the entire process was such a healing experience for me. We had this really beautiful, but sad, type of fun picking out the ingredients for Clouse’s rainbow bridge meal.

On the morning of Clouse’s scheduled trip, the first thing my son said to me when he woke up was ā€œMom! It is his rainbow bridge day! Yay!ā€ and I knew I’d done my job. 🄹

This was my first time scheduling a euthanasia for one of my dogs. I agonized over whether I was making the right decision at the right time. Then the vet told me ā€œIt’s always better to do a day early than a day late,ā€ and it really resonated with me because the last thing I ever wanted was for Clouse to be in pain.

So many things had already given me the confirmation I needed; he no longer followed me from room to room, he stopped coming to the kitchen when I opened the treat drawer, he couldn’t hear knocks at the door, he struggled to get up, and his appetite was gone. Those are the big things that anyone would notice, and I selfishly let them happen for a long time before allowing myself to recognize the more ā€œhiddenā€ signs; the top of his head (my favorite part of his body) smelled different, the brightness in his eyes was dimmed, and his body felt ā€œchangedā€ when I touched him. I let myself ignore the signs that only I would see because I didn’t want to let him go.

When he didn’t stand up to eat his rainbow bridge meal, for me that was a teeny tiny confirmation I had made the right decision. Then the next morning before the vet arrived, Clouse fell down the stairs for the first time. I felt something change inside me, and my whole body knew it was time to let him go. I held him and selfishly said, ā€œthank you for falling, thank you, thank you,ā€ because it felt like he was making sure I wasn’t left with any ā€œwhat if’sā€. He was telling me that emotionally, mentally, and physically it was his time.

Thank you for protecting me, buddy. Thank you for loving me, and for letting me love you. You were always supposed to be with me, I’m so grateful I was able to take care of you. Go find Kansas for me. šŸ©·šŸ«¶šŸ½
