I copied this from a friend Angie Tutewohl. This is why we feed so many of our horses Enrich from Purina and/or a sufficiently LBs of grain from one of their other feed sources!
Did you know that all horses need some form of supplementation beyond hay? Its impossible to know exactly what vitamins and minerals your horse will be lacking without getting your hay tested for a gauranteed analysis. Ration balancers are recommended vs vitamin and mineral supplements for a few reasons.
Good Ration Balancers provide quality protein and amino acids, that many mineral balancers lack. Ration balancers are designed to give the horse everything they need without oversupplementing a specific vitamin or mineral. Some vitamins/minerals are completely useless unless paired with another that will allow their absorption (copper and zinc for example). Some even become toxic when over supplemented like Selenium and Iron.
The feed rate is only 1 lb. The calories provided by the ration balancers are minimal, as the horse spends energy (calories) to break down the protein. Usually, supplements have to be mixed with a forage carrier. The amount of calories provided by a ration balancer vs a carrier is about the same.
Ration balancers are considered "feed products" so fall under AAFCO and FDA guidelines regarding quality control and labeling. Supplements do not fall under AAFO/FDA so they are completely unregulated.
There is a reason that big name brands employ several nutritionists and microbiologists with a PH. D. as well as quality control specialists and do significant amounts of product testing before releasing the products. They also have representatives that will help you get the products you need and explain what each is any how they're different!!
There are a ton of boutique feeds going around claiming to be beneficial in so many ways with no actual research to back up their claims. Look into what you're feeding!!!
Please do your research on what you're feeding your horse, or let the experts do it for you!! Also FEED and GRAIN are not the same.....
