I am THRILLED to announce that we have a Rusty Patched Bumblebee sighting on our farm! Thank you Lynn Reuvers for your citizen science for The Xerces Society and your bumblebee survey. The Rusty Patched Bumblebee is endangered, due to pathogens and exposure to pesticides, specifically insecticides and fungicides, along with habitat loss, competition from non-native (honey) bees, and the effects of climate change. The Rusty Patched Bumblebee is the Minnesota state bee, and is featured on our mural. I will announce more of her findings as she analyzes the photos she took.

Our Minnesota Native flowers are coming into their full glory! We have large beds of native flowers and foliage along our hedgerow and several other beds around the farm. The pollinators love them, and they are host plants to many different pollinators, as well as providing seeds for the birds to eat, especially over winter. We do harvest some for use in bouquets, but always leave some for Mother Nature. They contribute to a sustainable way of farming, needing no water once established, and helping filter rainwater headed to our aquifers. They sequester carbon into the earth with their deep deep roots, and of course help the pollinators and other creatures with reproduction, food, habitat, etc. Yay for native plants!

Yay Allie Bleed Heart Floral Farm & Design.

Minnesota's definition of a farm is changing, thanks in part to a cut flower farmer in Mazeppa. Even with the makings of a traditional farm, Bleed Heart Floral wasn't classified as a farm under Minnesota law earlier this year.
