This Valentine’s Day we just want to remind you to keep in mind what kind of flowers you’re giving and/or receiving to your loved ones. Some flowers may be toxic to pets at home. Also don’t forget to store the chocolate where your dogs can’t reach (or just eat it all in one sitting!)

Hope everyone has a wonderful Valentine’s Day with your loved ones! ♥️💐

Pillar 2. Provide multiple and separated key environmental resources.
According to Dr. St-Denis: “Within their defined territory, cats need sources of food and water, places to hide and perch, places to sleep safely, objects/toys to hunt and a place to void and defecate. These resources need to be safely available throughout the territory. This is particularly important in multi-cat households.”
This should ideally be for each cat!

According to cat behavior experts, there are 5 pillars that need to be met in order to have a healthy environment and reduce cat stress.

Pillar 1. Provide a safe place! This means cats need somewhere that is their own - especially in a multi-cat home - that is a place of calm without threat from other cats, dogs, or anything else that can be stressful. This needs to be a place they can truly let their guard down.
Most cats like an elevated location (such as a perch, cat tree, or hammock) that’s soothing/comfy and with easy escape routes - we don’t want a cat to feel trapped in this spot. But for some cats this may be a cardboard box or a similar hiding place.

Next we’ll talk about Pillar 2!

You’ve heard of Pandora’s box, but have you heard of Pandora syndrome?

Some cats have a decreased ability to handle stress - which means even if you give them the most pampered life ever, they still can get stressed! This stress can lead to them having behavior changes, vomiting and diarrhea, and even lead to the bladder becoming inflamed. All of these are part of Pandora syndrome.

When the bladder is inflamed, this part of Pandora syndrome is called feline idiopathic cystitis. It may look like a bladder infection to an owner because the bladder is very sensitive and irritated just like an infection. However, we’ve learned antibiotics don’t work in these cases! This is why running a urinalysis is so important.

Phew - next week we’ll learn how to decrease stress for cats!

Did you know? 🧐
When your cat is not urinating in their litter box like they should, there are 4 main things that vets have to rule out:

1. Medical issues (pain/urgency)
2. Stress! (Yes stress is a very common cause of urinary issues - stay tuned for more on this!)
3. Litter box or litter aversion
4. Territorial/communication issues (especially in multi-cat households)

We’ll soon dive into stress and cystitis later this week!

( If you answered marking on our story on Instagram. You are CORRECT!!! 🎉 fun fact below⤵️)

For our next post on cat urinary health- is your cat urinating outside the litter box or is it actually marking?🤔

With marking:
- Will often be on a vertical surface, a small amount of urine, will not dig before or try to cover the urine, standing posture, the tail will give a little shake, and it’s often in “socially relevant” locations (near windows/doors or other pets favored places)

With inappropriate/undesirable but toileting urination:
- Usually a horizontal location, they have a squatting posture, they will try to dig or cover before and after urinating . 🙀

How can we know when cats do or don’t like their litter?  The most popular type of litter with cats is clumping, sand-like, unscented litter.  But not all cats are the same!  The more your cat digs in the litter box, the more they like the litter! 😻 If they tend to sit on the edge of the litter box and don’t dig much, it probably doesn’t like the litter😾 - this is known as a “substrate aversion”.

This month on our social media we will be focusing on our feline friends and how to keep everyone happy when it comes to litter boxes and general home care. 😻We’ll be sharing various facts, tips, and myths throughout this month. Today we’ll keep it simple. When it comes to a cat’s litter box, the ideal size is 1.5 x the length of their nose to the base of their tail. Ideally this should be width and depth!

Stay tuned for more!😽
