Did you know that dogs and cats are much more sensitive to THC than humans? Even a small amount can cause serious illness.

🚶 During walks, keep an eye on what your dog is sniffing or picking up. Discarded joints or blunts on sidewalks, trails, or parks are a surprisingly common source of THC exposure.

If you think your pet may have been exposed to THC, contact your veterinarian or the nearest emergency veterinary hospital immediately. Early treatment can make all the difference. 💙

✨ Meet Laura Paulius ✨

Laura joined Oak Park Animal Hospital in 2023 as our Hospital Manager, bringing more than 30 years of veterinary experience and helping guide our hospital through a period of growth, collaboration, and positive change. Her leadership, dedication, and steady presence have made a lasting impact on both our team and the families we serve.

In January 2026, Laura transitioned into a more flexible role, continuing to support OPAH through our spay days, team training, and on an as-needed basis. While we miss seeing her every day, we’re incredibly grateful that she continues to share her knowledge and experience with our team.

Known for her compassionate leadership, clear communication, and ability to build trust, Laura has always been passionate about supporting both people and animals. Her influence continues to help our team grow while staying true to the values that define Oak Park Animal Hospital.

Outside of the hospital, Laura enjoys hiking and spending time with family and friends. She has shared her life with many beloved pets over the years and currently dedicates her time to caring for and fostering neighborhood cats, making sure they are safe, warm, and well cared for. 🐈💙

Say hello to Nemo! 💙🐾

Nemo, this adorable dapple Dachshund, came in for his very first puppy exam and completely stole our hearts. Full of personality, he kept us smiling with his goofy antics, made it very clear that waiting wasn’t his favorite activity, and happily accepted every belly rub he could get. 🥹

We love getting to meet our newest puppies and helping them get off to a healthy start. Welcome to the Oak Park Animal Hospital family, Nemo! ❤️

Debby is a nationally board-certified canine massage therapist who works alongside our veterinary team to provide healing touch and supportive care for our patients.

Her gentle, compassionate approach focuses on promoting comfort, mobility, and overall well-being, helping pets feel more relaxed throughout their care. Debby also has a special interest in cultural healing practices and energy medicine, bringing a thoughtful, holistic perspective to every patient she works with.

Outside of Oak Park Animal Hospital, Debby enjoys swimming, biking, reading, and watching movies. She values the opportunity to support the health and well-being of a diverse population of animals and is grateful to be part of a team dedicated to exceptional patient care.

💛 A loss of appetite is never something to ignore in cats.

This patient came to us after losing weight and refusing to eat. During the exam, we discovered a serious clue- jaundice (icterus).

Jaundice occurs when bilirubin, a yellow pigment, builds up in the body due to liver disease, bile duct problems, or other underlying conditions.

In this case, the yellow discoloration could be seen in:
🐱 The gums
👁️ The whites of the eyes
💛 Even the skin beneath the fur
🩸 The blood serum after it was spun in the lab
🚽 And urine that had turned a dark orange color

Bloodwork confirmed severe liver disease, and treatment was started right away.

Cats are incredibly good at hiding illness. If your cat has stopped eating, is losing weight, seems more tired than usual, or you notice any yellow discoloration of the eyes, gums, ears, or skin, don’t wait to have them evaluated.

Early diagnosis and treatment can make all the difference. 🐾

As one of our Pet Care Specialists, Maggie has a special gift for making pets feel safe and comfortable. Whether they’re here for a visit or boarding with us, she takes the time to learn each pet’s unique personality, routines, and preferences because she knows it’s the little details that make a big difference.

At home, Maggie shares her life with her cat, Onyx, and her birds, continuing a lifelong love of animals. She can’t imagine life without them.

When asked what she loves most about her work, her answer is simple: caring for animals. She believes in the quiet, unconditional love they give and the comfort they bring to the people who love them. ❤️

Outside of the hospital, Maggie enjoys spending quality time with her family and her pets.
