I don’t love dog parks and I suspect most dogs don’t as well. The perfect dog park would be ten lovely golden retrievers bouncing around. But that is not who shows up. The dogs that show up may be over-stimulated and ready to play roughly with other dogs. Others may be scared and are being pushed to socialize. At any given time, there will be several dogs who don’t know how to read the room. All these types are recipes for skirmishes or worse. Think about how you like to socialize. Do you like parties that are large where friends bring friends and you don’t know many people and feel overwhelmed? Or do you like small gatherings with close friends that make you feel happy and safe? It’s likely to be the latter for many of us. To put that in terms of dogs, consider play dates with the dogs of your friends who have similar temperaments. Test them out by meeting with each dog on a leash. If they seem excited but appropriate try them in a yard. Let them play and call them back to you after about ten minutes. It’s not the end of fun, it’s just to give them a break so they don’t get too excited. Be sure to have water for the dogs and perhaps cocktails for your friends. It’s a much better way to provide enrichment to your pets. And if you absolutely must go to a dog park, please go when it’s mostly quiet and not at peak hours. It’s always best to be cautious.

Everybody needs to play! Have some fun yourself - go to an escape room or learn pickle ball. And have some fun with your dogs. Play some fetch or try some agility. To teach your dog to jump, take a stick or a broom on the ground and put your dog on a leash. Practice walking him back and forth over the stick. To add a little height, put it through the holes of a laundry basket or put it on top of some books. Whatever it takes to elevate the stick a little. Practice walking or having him jump over the stick. say good and give a treat every time he goes over. If you have a friend help, wait on one side with your dog. Ask your friend to call your dog and again reward him for going over the jump. As your dog gets better and better at it, add some more height. Remember that this is fun! No need for harsh words or force.

So I am doing an evaluation for those interested in becoming animal assisted therapy dogs with Petpartners.org. Anyone able to volunteer to be part of a crowd or to bring a neutral dog. It’s May 27 in the city near Oak Park.
Thanks!

The Pet Partners Therapy Animal program registers nine species of therapy animals: therapy dogs, therapy cats, therapy horses, therapy rabbits, therapy birds, therapy llamas and alpacas, therapy rats, therapy guinea pigs, and therapy pigs.
