This Halloween, we want to see your pets! Cats in costumes, dogs dressed for the occasion, festive rabbits, or the pet who wants absolutely nothing to do with any of it.

A little Halloween advice from the animal experts at Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh: Costumes are only fun if your pet agrees! Watch their body language, avoid anything that limits movement or breathing, keep candy and wrappers out of reach, and offer a quiet space if trick-or-treaters make them nervous.

After all, the best Halloween is a safe and happy one for everyone in the family.

Don’t look directly at him. Penumbra’s smile could be blinding! ☀️
This devastatingly cute pup is one of the long-stay dogs at Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh. Penumbra arrived as a stray, so his past is a mystery, but his future can still be bright.
He is energetic, enthusiastic and looking for a patient family who will help him continue learning his manners. When Penumbra greets someone he loves, his happiness takes over his entire body. Prepare for maximum wiggles!

Can Penumbra meet your current dog? He has done well with other dogs in HARP’s care, and a meet and greet can help determine whether they may be compatible.

Adopting a long-stay dog gives a deserving pet a fresh start while creating room to help another animal in need.

Our foster families are an essential part of how Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh cares for animals in our community.

Fostering is more than giving an animal a temporary home. It's helping a shy pet build confidence, giving an animal time to recover, learning about their personality, and sharing valuable information that helps us find the right adoptive family.

And when an animal moves into their forever home, that foster space can open up for someone else who needs it.

The sweetest Halloween update landed in our inbox! You might remember Honey Bun from his time with us at HARP. These days, he goes by Honey Bee, and judging by the photos his family sent us, the name fits pretty perfectly.

Seeing a former shelter pet at home, loved, settled in and dressed as an actual honey bee? This is the kind of update we could look at all day.

Big adventures. New discoveries. And a whole lot of curiosity!

What happens when you give kids the opportunity to explore the world of animal welfare? You never quite know what might spark their interest!

This summer, our Camp Rescue and Jr. Rehabber Corps participants did more than learn about animals. They explored wildlife, discovered what it takes to care for animals in need, asked thoughtful questions, and experienced firsthand how people and animals are connected.

At Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh, we believe humane education helps build more than knowledge. It encourages empathy, confidence, curiosity, and compassion that kids can carry into whatever comes next.

Whether this summer inspired a future veterinarian, wildlife rehabilitator, scientist, or simply a lifelong animal advocate, we're excited to see where their curiosity takes them!

A huge thank you to our campers, families, and Education team for making this summer one to remember.

And the adventures aren't over! Stay tuned because our 2027 summer camp schedule will be announced at the start of the new year!

✨ Makeover Monday ✨

Meet this week’s Makeover Monday star, Rice! 🐾💙

This two-year-old mixed breed came to Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh (HARP) when his owner could no longer care for him. Since arriving, Rice has been showing off his smarts and picking up new things quickly. He’s also a big fan of staying close to his people—whether that means leaning against your legs for some love or walking right by your side!

A little extra TLC from our friends at The Dog Stop East End helped Rice look and feel his best while he waits for his next chapter. We’re so grateful to their team for giving our shelter pups some well-deserved pampering! 💙

There’s a lot that goes into caring for the animals who come through our doors, and our veterinary technicians are there for so much of it.

They’re monitoring patients, assisting with medical procedures, helping animals recover, and making sure each one gets the attention and care they need. They’re also the ones offering a little extra comfort when an animal is scared or having a difficult day.

It’s not always easy work, and much of it happens behind the scenes. But we see the difference they make every day.

As National Veterinary Technician Week comes to a close, our Executive Director Dan Cody joins us in celebrating the incredible veterinary technicians at Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh.

To our vet tech team, thank you for your knowledge, your patience, and the compassion you bring to every animal in your care. We’re lucky to work alongside you, and we couldn’t do this without you.
