✨ As the year comes to a close ✨
We are pausing to reflect on a year filled with resilience, compassion, and countless lives changed one paw at a time. Through every challenge and every joyful moment, our community showed up with heart, kindness, and an unwavering belief that animals deserve care, safety, and love.

As we welcome a new year, we are carrying that hope forward for the animals still waiting, the families who will find them, and the futures we will build together.

Remember we are closed today and will reopen tomorrow.

From all of us at Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh, we wish you a safe, peaceful, and hopeful New Year. 💚

Here’s to what’s ahead. 🐾✨

Make Over Monday… on a Tuesday! ✨🐾
Bombyx Mori started her week feeling fresh and confident thanks to The Dog Stop, who treated her to a soothing oatmeal bath, gentle grooming, and plenty of TLC. Clean, comfy, and looking her absolute best, she was more than ready to show off who she really is.

And who she is? An easygoing, adaptable, genuinely sweet dog who makes a great first impression. Bombyx moves through new environments with confidence, walks nicely on leash, and shows no reactivity when passing people or other dogs. She does best with calm greetings and mirrors that energy right back. Polite, steady, and tuned in.

She is social without being overwhelming, affectionate without being demanding, and playful enough to keep life fun. She does have a good amount of energy and will thrive with regular play and enrichment, but she also knows how to settle and go with the flow. Smart, responsive, and eager to engage, especially when treats are involved.

Anyone who adopts Bombyx Mori is bringing home a truly special companion.

🦉 A Second Chance for a Great Horned Owl 🦉
This great horned owl came to us after he was likely hit by a car. He arrived disoriented with a concussion, but X-rays showed no broken bones.

He spent a little over two weeks in our flight enclosure, practicing his hunting and flight skills in a controlled space while our wildlife team closely monitored his recovery. As his balance, strength, and focus returned, he proved he was ready for the next step.

Once fully healed, this powerful owl was cleared for release and returned to the wild where he belongs.

Every successful release is made possible by expert care and community support. Thank you for helping wildlife get their second chance. Make your mark here: https://humaneanimalrescue.org/donate/

With this ever changing snowy, icy, sunny weather it's hard to keep our pets paws clean!

Did you know? A simple kitchen whisk can help remove snow and ice from your pet’s fur.

Gently tap or brush the whisk over their coat, and the snow falls away easily without pulling or discomfort.

Follow for more tips!

Harsh Weather Safety Ideas for your Community Cats!

Cold, always changing weather can be dangerous for cats living outdoors, but a few simple actions can make a life-saving difference.

Here are three easy ways to help keep community cats safe this in this harsh weather:
🚗 When it's cold out- knock on your hood before starting your car
Cats can climb up into warm engine compartments from underneath. A quick knock or tap gives them a chance to jump out safely.

🏠 Provide a harsh weather shelter
A simple, insulated shelter gives cats a dry, wind-protected place to stay warm. We have an easy step-by-step guide on our blog to help you build one for the cats in your neighborhood.

❄️ Clear the path
Shovel snow, ice, collected leaves and debris away from shelter entrances and feeding areas so cats do not have to maneuver through obstacles to find safety.

Small acts add up to big protection during cold snaps.

Meet Maple, Maude & Max🎄
3 good dogs. 1 holiday wish.

The shelter is twinkling, tails are wagging, & these 3 sweet pups are soaking up all the holiday cheer.

They love walks, treats, cozy naps, & showing off their festive looks.
Most of all, they’re ready to share that joy with a family of their own.

This season, their wish is simple:
a couch to curl up on, a hand to hold the leash, & a home filled with love.

🎁 Adopt. Foster. Share the magic.

This eastern box turtle’s journey changed in a moment.

He arrived at our Wildlife Rehabilitation Center after being hit by a car, with a fracture along the bottom of his shell. For a turtle, that kind of injury can be life-threatening. The shell is not armor. It is bone, blood supply, and protection all in one.

Our team was able to stabilize his injury and give him the care he needed to start healing. Because turtles heal slowly, this one will spend the winter with us, resting and recovering in a quiet, safe space.

When spring arrives and his shell is strong again, he will return to the wild where he belongs.
This is what wildlife care looks like. Stepping in when human-made dangers cause harm, then giving wild animals the time they need to heal.

Our Story

The Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center and Western PA Humane Society, each with long histories of helping animals in our community, have joined to become Humane Animal Rescue! Earlier this year, our two organizations merged to form one of the largest animal welfare associations in Pennsylvania, tasked with providing enhanced services to domestic and wild animals alike. Humane Animal Rescue continues the legacies of the ARL & WPHS, bringing greater efficiency in animal care processes, staff training, and cutting-edge practices to one cohesive organization. We strive to provide all aspects of care to abandoned, neglected, and injured animals; reunite lost pets with their caregivers or seek new families for them; educate the community on humane care and interactions with all animals with the goal of reducing pet overpopulation and negative relationships with native wildlife; reinforce a standard of living for animals and prevent cruelty; and provide assistance and medical care to injured, orphaned, or ill native Pennsylvania wildlife with a goal of returning them to their natural habitat. Our open door policy ensures that no animal is ever refused shelter. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- This page is for Humane Animal Rescue supporters.
