🐱💙 Happy International Cat Day! 💙🐱

Today we celebrate the amazing, quirky, independent, loving, and sometimes downright ridiculous creatures who make our lives better every single day! 😻

From the lap snuggler to the curtain climber, the purr machine to the cat who thinks they run the household (because they absolutely do 😹) — every cat is special in their own way.

International Cat Day is also a great reminder to celebrate responsible cat care. Regular veterinary visits, preventive care, proper nutrition, enrichment, and lots of love can help our feline friends live their happiest, healthiest lives. 🩺❤️

And of course, today calls for a little extra spoiling!

From tiny, frightened kittens to a bright future. ❤️

This sweet girl and her brother came to Tiny Tales Rescue scared, vulnerable, and in need of a second chance. Thanks to the love and dedication of her foster family, she has blossomed into a beautiful young cat.

She is up-to-date on her vaccines, spayed, and ready to find her forever home.

🐱 Could Your Cat Be Hiding Breathing Problems?

One condition we see fairly often is pleural effusion—a buildup of fluid around the lungs. This fluid makes it harder for the lungs to fully expand, so breathing becomes more difficult.

What makes pleural effusion tricky is that cats are very good at hiding illness. Many owners don’t notice anything unusual until the symptoms become more obvious, and that’s completely understandable because the early signs can be easy to miss.

Some subtle changes to watch for include:
🐾 Breathing a little faster than usual while resting
🐾 Sleeping more than normal
🐾 Decreased appetite
🐾 Hiding more often
🐾 Less interest in playing or jumping
🐾 Quietly sitting with their neck stretched out while breathing

Pleural effusion isn’t a disease itself—it’s a sign that something else is going on, such as heart disease, infection, inflammation, cancer, or another medical condition. Fortunately, once diagnosed, we can often remove the fluid to help your cat breathe more comfortably while we work to identify the underlying cause.

💙 The best thing you can do is pay attention to small changes in your cat’s normal routine. If your cat’s breathing seems different, or they’re acting unlike themselves, give your veterinarian a call. It may turn out to be nothing serious, but it’s always worth having them checked.

Early recognition gives us the best opportunity to help our feline friends feel their best.

🐱 Fleas are more than just an itchy nuisance! 🐱

When it comes to flea control, not all products are created equal.

Many over-the-counter flea products may not be as safe or as effective as people expect. Fleas can become resistant to older products, and some can even cause serious side effects if used incorrectly. Your veterinarian stays up to date on the latest flea prevention options and can recommend the safest, most effective product for your cat. Some of these products are available over the counter, while others require a prescription.

If you discover fleas, remember that treating your cat is only part of the battle. Flea eggs, larvae, and pupae can be hiding throughout your home and yard.

🧺 Wash all bedding, blankets, and other washable fabrics in hot water.
🧹 Vacuum carpets, furniture, rugs, and cracks along baseboards frequently. Be sure to empty the vacuum or seal and dispose of the bag or debris immediately afterward.
🌿 Treat your yard if your pet spends time outdoors, especially shaded areas where fleas thrive.

If you only treat your pet and ignore the environment, fleas will continue to hatch and re-infest your cat. Successful flea control requires treating your pet, your home, and your yard together.

💙 Blueberry Update 💙

Our sweet Blueberry is still hanging in there, and she is fighting with everything she’s got. She continues to show us just how strong and determined she is.

Her prognosis remains guarded, and we’re still waiting on additional test results that will help guide her care. Every day is a new challenge, but we’re taking things one step at a time and giving her all the support she needs.

We also want to give a heartfelt thank you to Blueberry’s incredible benefactor. Your kindness and generosity have made it possible for Blueberry to receive the care she desperately needs. Your compassion is truly making a difference, and we are so grateful.

Please continue to keep Blueberry in your thoughts as she continues her fight. We’ll share more updates as we learn more. 💙🐾

🦟 Don’t Let Fleas Fool You! They’re More Than Just an Itchy Nuisance.

Fleas may be tiny, but they can cause BIG health problems for your cat.

🐈 Why are fleas so dangerous?
• Flea bites cause intense itching and discomfort.
• Some cats develop flea allergy dermatitis, where just one flea bite can trigger severe itching, scabs, and hair loss.
• Fleas can transmit tapeworms if your cat accidentally swallows an infected flea while grooming.
• They can also carry Bartonella (the bacteria associated with cat scratch disease) and other infectious organisms.
• Heavy flea infestations—especially in kittens, elderly cats, or sick cats—can cause flea anemia. Because fleas feed on blood, a large number of them can remove enough blood to become life-threatening.

🚫 How do you get rid of fleas?
Treating your cat is only part of the battle. Fleas spend much of their life cycle in the environment.

✔️ Use a veterinarian-recommended flea preventive on every dog and cat in the household.
✔️ Vacuum carpets, rugs, furniture, and baseboards frequently.
✔️ Wash pet bedding in hot water.
✔️ Continue prevention year-round—even after you stop seeing fleas. Eggs and pupae can survive in the environment and hatch weeks later.

🐾 Remember: If you see one flea, there are often many more hiding in your home.

The best treatment is prevention. Keeping your cat on monthly flea prevention protects them from itchy skin, dangerous parasites, flea anemia, and the diseases fleas can spread.

🚗 Choosing the Right Cat Carrier Matters! 🐱

Not all cat carriers are created equal, and the best one depends on where you’re going!

For long road trips, a larger carrier can give your cat extra room to stretch, change positions, and stay comfortable during extended travel.

However, for routine veterinary visits, a smaller carrier is usually the better choice. A carrier should be just large enough for your cat to comfortably stand up and turn around. Smaller spaces often help cats feel more secure and less anxious.

When shopping for a carrier, we recommend looking for one that:
✔️ Is made of sturdy, hard plastic
✔️ Has both a front door and a top-opening option, making it easier to gently remove your cat if they’re feeling nervous
✔️ Comes apart easily so the top can be removed during the exam, allowing your cat to remain in the bottom half of the carrier if they feel safer there

A well-designed carrier helps reduce stress for your cat and makes veterinary visits safer and easier for everyone involved.

🐱 Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP): It Doesn’t Always Look the Same

FIP is a serious disease caused by a mutation of the feline coronavirus. The good news is that FIP is no longer considered a death sentence. With early diagnosis and treatment, many cats can recover.

There are three main forms of FIP, and some cats can even have a combination of them.

💧 Wet (Effusive) FIP
This form causes fluid to build up in the abdomen or chest.
Signs may include:
• Swollen, pot-bellied abdomen
• Difficulty breathing
• Lethargy
• Fever that doesn’t respond to antibiotics
• Weight loss or poor appetite

🧠 Neurological (Dry) FIP
This form affects the brain and spinal cord.
Signs may include:
• Wobbling or trouble walking
• Weakness
• Tremors or seizures
• Head tilt
• Behavior changes
• Difficulty jumping or using the litter box

👁️ Ocular (Eye) FIP
Sometimes the eyes are the first place FIP shows itself.
Signs may include:
• Cloudy eyes
• Changes in eye color
• Redness or inflammation
• Vision loss
• Unequal pupil size

❤️ General Signs of FIP
No matter the form, many cats also experience:
• Persistent fever
• Weight loss
• Decreased appetite
• Lethargy
• Poor hair coat

While FIP was once almost always fatal, treatment options have changed dramatically in recent years. The sooner FIP is recognized, the sooner treatment can begin—and that can make all the difference.

If your cat has persistent, unexplained symptoms, don’t wait. Schedule an examination with your veterinarian. Early diagnosis gives your cat the best chance for a successful outcome. 🐾
