A hand habit almost every beginner has. Sometimes it can take a while to break.

It's gripping the reins for balance instead of using their seat and legs.

It makes total sense; when you feel unsteady, your instinct is to hold onto something, and the reins are right there.

The problem is your horse feels every bit of that grip in his mouth, and it actually makes him more tense, not less.

The fix isn't 'stop holding the reins', it's building enough balance elsewhere that your hands don't need to compensate anymore.

That's most of what early lessons are quietly working on.

Are riding lessons worth the time & money? It depends on what you're actually buying.

If you're expecting a quick hobby you can pick up and put down, this might feel expensive.

But if you want a kid who learns responsibility, discipline, and follow-through, this tends to pay off in ways that don't show up on a receipt. I'd rather be straight with a family about that upfront than have them figure it out three months in.

If your horse tends to fall out through the shoulder in a turn, pulling harder on the inside rein usually isn’t the answer.

Instead, think inside leg → outside rein.
Your inside leg asks for the bend and keeps your horse from falling in, while your outside rein helps control the outside shoulder and keeps the horse balanced and on the track.

This becomes especially important when riding a course. A balanced turn isn’t just about getting the front legs around the corner; it's about riding with enough leg and hand to create a “round” canter coming from the hind end that carries the horse balanced through the turn.

The goal isn’t to pull your horse through the turn; it is to ride with enough leg to keep your impulsion going through the turn.

What should you look for in a lesson barn?

If you're choosing a barn for you or your child, here's what actually matters and it's not always the fanciest facility.

✨Look past the pretty pictures.
✨Ask how the trainer matches horses to riders.
✨Ask what a typical lesson progression looks like over six months.

Watch a lesson if you can, and pay attention to whether the trainer is actually teaching or just supervising.

A barn can look beautiful, but the trainer's years of experience and program will truly improve your riding.

Great facilities come and go, but the best trainers stand the test of time and consistently provide great results.

Been riding a while and feel like you’ve plateaued? It’s usually not a talent problem…

Most of the time, feeling stuck comes down to one of two things:
1️⃣ Repeating the same mistakes in training without addressing them with a fresh approach in your flatwork and jumping
2️⃣ Needing a professional with the skill set as a rider to truly fix your horse’s problems/bad habits.

We recently took on a new horse at Eden Farm that had become too hot and intimidating for his adult amateur rider.

We changed his bridle, added turnout, and put him in a training program that kept his mind engaged. This horse was bored! After 6 months, his owner said, “he’s a completely different horse; I feel so comfortable and confident on him!” 🙌

Every parent asks some version of this, even if they don’t say it out loud. Is my kid safe out there?

It's a fair question, and I'd honestly be a little worried if a parent didn't ask it.

Horses are big animals, and this isn't a risk-free activity, nobody should pretend it is.

What we control is everything around that risk.

Matched horses, supervised handling from day one, no rider progressing faster than they're ready for, and clear rules for kids around horses even outside of lessons.

My job isn't to eliminate all risk, because you can't. My job is to manage it like it's my own kid up there. And that’s what my team and I do.

It’s easy to be thankful when everything is going right.

But I’m learning that some of the deepest gratitude comes when you stop and recognize God’s goodness even in the middle of the messy, uncertain, or ordinary.

For the horses.
For the people who walk through these barn doors.
For the lessons that have nothing to do with riding.
For second chances.
For answered prayers—and even the prayers I’m still waiting on.

There is always something to thank God for.

Not because everything is perfect, but because He is faithful through it all.
“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” - 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Happy Fall from Eden Farm!🐴

It may technically be fall… but here in Florida, we’re still waiting for the “cooler weather” part. 😂☀️

Until then, we’ll be enjoying our horses, barn days, and pretending it feels like sweater weather.
