The world’s worries can seem to oppress
The unknown is all too near
Yet nature lives in darkness as well as the light
The stars and the wind hold no fear
Horses live surrounded by danger and strife
Each threshold may hold a threat
Through watchful alertness they manage to thrive
The tiger hasn’t caught us yet
If we open our minds to the mystery
Trusting each step will be played by heart
We can embrace the guidance of silent wings
And learn to see in the dark

Many of us find the appearance of animals as signs from Nature. Owls are particularly popular as messengers of timing and portent. The wonderful author Ted Andrews wrote the book "Animalspeak" as a wonderful reference for the symbolic aspects of animals as totems and guides.
Since animals are emerging from hiding during this hiatus of human activity, we have the opportunity to be even more blessed by their nearness. I've written recently in my newsletter about my mare Darma and her fears of neighborhood noises. The other day I was in Darma's paddock offering her some healing energy. It was early dusk and we were having a peaceful moment of sharing space. Then something made me look to a nearby stack of pallets. A falcon had just alighted there, ten feet from where Darma stood. They regarded each other. I was merely an onlooker. I had no doubt that some silent communication passed between them. Whereupon the falcon turned and flew over our driveway gate directly towards one of the neighbors Darma is most vigilant about. I wondered if the falcon was offering her vision and vigilance in that area to help Darma feel more protected. I was so blessed to witness the moment of communion between them.
