Cat Town

Cat Town We are a nonprofit cat rescue based in Oakland, California. Come visit us at our Adoption Center! Cat Town is an Oakland-based nonprofit organization.

Our mission is cats. Together, we save the lives of at-risk cats, find them loving homes, and advocate for a future where every cat is valued. Cat Town made history by opening America’s first cat cafe in 2014, right here in Oakland. In doing so, we created a new platform to meet elderly, frightened, stressed, sick, and injured cats — a place where adopters could meet them at their best: stress-fre

e, healthy, and ready for love. About half of our cats reside at our Adoption Center until they get adopted. The rest of our cats live in foster homes around the East Bay or in our kitten adoption space at Pet Food Express in Rockridge. Our approach to cat rescue proves these overlooked cats are highly adoptable, and has been shared with other rescues across the country, helping transform what's possible for vulnerable cats. Looking for an excuse to spend more time with cats this month? Whether your idea of self-care involves a yoga mat or a sketchbook, we have you covered!

On June 9, join us for Calm Cats & Yoga Mats, an all-levels yoga class led by Parul (they/them). Their fun, grounding vinyasa practice begins with breathwork and builds into movements tailored to your experience level — all in the company of some excellent feline yoga buddies.

Then on June 17, bring a sketchbook and join us for Paw N’ Draw, a relaxed evening of art, cats, and community. You'll have the chance to sketch our cats as they lounge, play, and occasionally investigate your work. We'll provide basic art supplies and professional guidance from local artist Chad White.

Both events tend to fill quickly, and our cats would love the company. Learn more, reserve your spot, and make some time for yourself: cattownoakland.org/reservations

Last spring, a frightened senior cat was abandoned in the lobby of Rocket Dog Rescue. Gandalf was injured, sick, and clearly in need of urgent medical care. Instead of turning away from a complicated situation, the Rocket Dog Rescue team sprang into action, rushing him to VCA Animal Hospitals and placing him with a foster guardian while they worked to stabilize him.

What could have been the end of Gandalf’s story became the beginning of a remarkable recovery, thanks to a network of people who refused to let him fall through the cracks. Once he was stable, Rocket Dog reached out to for additional support, and together our teams made sure this gentle senior had the chance to heal, decompress, and finally experience the safety and comfort he deserved.

At 14 years old, Gandalf is a gentle, affectionate companion who loves laps, cozy naps, and quiet time with his people. His foster says, “if you want a binge watching or book reading buddy, he is your guy!” While he enjoys cuddles and gentle play, he’ll do best with an experienced adopter who can respect his boundaries and body language. Gandalf is FIV-positive and has manageable allergies controlled with a rabbit-only diet and daily medication, allowing him to live a long, comfortable life indoors.

Gandalf’s story shows what’s possible when our broader community comes together for a cat in need. We’re so grateful to Rocket Dog Rescue for stepping in quickly to save him and honored to help continue his journey home. If you’d like to give Gandalf the happy ending he deserves, submit an adoption inquiry today: https://bit.ly/cattownadoptioninquiry

Marshall and Lorenzo are two best friends determined to make the most of every day together!

Lorenzo, just 4 months old, is the outgoing adventurer of the pair. Friendly, confident, and endlessly curious, he’s always ready to investigate a new toy or follow his people around the house. He approaches life with enthusiasm — whether he’s batting a toy across the floor, learning a new trick for treats, or flopping over to ask for pets.

Seven-month-old Marshall is equally affectionate and enjoys soft pets and snuggling close. His easygoing nature makes hearts melt left and right, and when he’s feeling mischievous, you’ll find him in a friendly wrestling match, or instigating a game of chase with his best buddy!

Marshall and Lorenzo are almost always side by side — grooming one another, bird-watching, cuddling, and even eating together. This pair could be a wonderful match for first-time adopters or families with calm older kids. They’re looking for an indoor-only home where they can continue growing up together — and promise that together you’ll get twice the cuddles, twice the entertainment, and twice the love.

Today is the final day to become a monthly donor and have your first SIX months of donations TRIPLED — up to $15,000. Will you help us unlock lifesaving support for more cats like Denver?

When Denver arrived at Cat Town, he was sick, underweight, and struggling with multiple medical conditions. Coming from a home with too many animals, he needed immediate veterinary care, ongoing treatment, and a safe place to recover.

Today, Denver is feeling better and enjoying life — because monthly donors made it possible for us to say yes to the care he needed: dental surgery to relieve painful disease, a special diet to manage inflammatory bowel disease, medication for an autoimmune condition, and all the time and support needed to heal.

Every year, hundreds of vulnerable shelter cats come through Cat Town's doors needing medical care, behavioral support, and a second chance. Monthly donations provide the steady, reliable funding that allows us to step in for cats like Denver and give them the individualized care they deserve.

Become a monthly donor before midnight, and your impact will be tripled for six full months. Help more cats receive the comfort, treatment, and second chances that change lives.

Bamboo is a world-class cuddle bug, happily soaking up attention and settling in beside you for a cozy evening at home. This affectionate 14-year-old senior can make leaning against your leg feel like a full-time profession, and at night, happily climbs into bed, curls up beside you, and often rests a paw gently against you just to stay connected.

This mellow gentleman would do best in a calm home with someone willing to make a few thoughtful accommodations for his comfort, like low-entry litter boxes and easy-to-access resting spots. Like many seniors, Bamboo has arthritis and kidney disease, and takes daily medication mixed easily into his wet food.

Bamboo may be a lovebug, but he also enjoys playtime, such as “enthusiastically batting after wand toys from a comfortable position,” and vibing out to his catnip banana. In return for 5 minutes of toy time and extended cuddle sessions, he offers gratitude, gentleness, and yes, more cuddles. If he’s feeling overlooked, Bamboo isn’t shy about asking for attention — purring happily once he feels seen and reassured — and he may also enjoy the friendship of another calm cat companion.

If you’re ready for a deeply devoted feline friend, submit an adoption inquiry to meet Bamboo: https://bit.ly/cattownadoptioninquiry

Rehoming a cat is never an easy decision, but Home To Home helps cats move directly from one loving home to another — reducing stress and helping them transition more gently into their next chapter.

Cats like Stitch are looking for that fresh start. Stitch spent years living outside in East Oakland, cared for by a local feeder until a serious fight left him with a damaged eye. Once he landed in foster care, though, he adapted to indoor life almost immediately. Litter box? No problem. Lounging comfortably indoors all day? Absolutely.

“If you are looking for love and personality, Stitch is your man,” says his foster guardian. “He just wants to hang with his person.” When you’re home, Stitch will happily stick by your side. When you’re away, he settles in calmly and waits patiently for your return.

Stitch loves interactive play and can sometimes get a little mouthy, but he’s responded well to behavioral training and will benefit from continued structure and enrichment in his next home. He’d do best as the only cat and may be a good fit for a home with older children.

If Stitch sounds like your kind of companion — or if you’re hoping to meet another cat in need of a home — visit our Home To Home page to connect directly with caretakers. New cats are added all the time: https://home-home.org/shelter/cattown

Vera was 11 years old when she came to Cat Town. She was missing many of her teeth, dealing with possible dental disease and arthritis, and was shy, but allowed gentle pets. We moved her into a foster home where she could receive continued medical care, decompress, and slowly build confidence at her own pace.

After a year in our care, Vera found her person. Recently, her adopter shared this update:

“The Cat Town adoption ‘matchmakers’ introduced me to Vera just over two years ago. Vera was a 12 year old, toothless, former street cat, who mistrusted humans and was struggling with health issues. Finding her the right home had not been easy, but the Cat Town folks were confident that Vera just needed a safe, consistent place to settle and heal. So they gave me a gentle "nudge" in Vera's direction and I took her home.

Two years later, Vera is now a confident, calm, cheerful little love-bug whose favorite things are sunbathing, a "Da Bird" wand toy, and soccer, which she plays with ping-pong balls all around the apartment. Vera is still generally afraid of other humans, but loves to sit next to me and soak up scratches and cuddles. She is a patient and confident comrade and, recently, convinced my other (former feral) cat that sunbathing is best in tandem; they now follow the sunny spots around the apartment, jockeying for who gets the best floor space.

Cat Town has the most amazing way of matching cats with humans, and I will be forever grateful for that nudge towards Vera, an older, somewhat unwell little kitty that others had passed by. I am so grateful to have Vera in my life; she brings great cheer and joy to each day.

A million thank yous to Cat Town for the meaningful work you do!”

We asked our community to donate gently loved items, unique experiences, and valuable services for this year’s Yard Sale auction — and you showed up in a big way!

This year, we received more than 300 submissions, including pet portraits, gardening consultations, home goods, cat-themed treasures, and over $14,000 in donations from local businesses.

Thanks to your generosity, this year’s auction is shaping up to be one of our best yet. Every bid will help support vulnerable cats who need extra care, time, and second chances.

The auction launches August 11, and we can’t wait to show you everything this incredible community made possible. Thank you for continuing to show up for cats in such thoughtful, meaningful ways. Save the date and get ready to bid!

June is a beautiful, shy 4-year-old tabby who blossoms in a calm, quiet home. She takes her time getting to know new people, but once she feels safe, she settles into a mellow rhythm and enjoys gentle petting and peaceful companionship. Her foster says that when she’s at ease, she’ll even “chat” softly with you — a sweet reward for the patience you’ve shown.

June can startle easily, so she’s looking for an adopter with some cat experience and a thoughtful, gentle approach. She also needs a home with a calm, cat-friendly feline friend around her age to help grow her confidence. With a predictable routine, she’ll relax into a steady, comforting presence in the home.

If you’re looking for a quiet, tender companion who gives her heart slowly — and deeply — June might be the perfect match. Submit an Adoption Inquiry to meet her: https://bit.ly/cattownadoptioninquiry
