Hard to believe that Crimson was just smaller than this squash!

When he first arrived at the Veterinary Hospital in March, 3-week-old Crimson was emaciated and unable to stand due to the significant injuries to his back leg.

Now, heโ€™s growing fast, exploring his indoor and outdoor access at the hospital, and showing off his bold, sometimes described as ornery, personality! ๐Ÿ˜‹

He still has a long road of recovery ahead, but heโ€™s come a long way already. โค๏ธ

Two desserts are better than one ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฐ

Flan and Trifle are a bonded pair of bunny sisters who are ready to bring twice the fun, curiosity, and cuddle time to their future home. These sweet girls love exploring side by side, then settling in together for pets and attention. Wherever one goes, the other is never far behind.

At under a year old, theyโ€™re still playful, silly, and full of personality. If youโ€™ve been thinking about adding a little more joy to your life, these two might be the perfect pair.

Come meet Flan and Trifle at Oakland Animal Services!

No, "personal space" is not in their vocabulary. ๐Ÿ˜Š

P.S. There is always a meerkat lookout on duty. Check out the sentry in the back!

We have sad news to share. Last week, Quila, our female juvenile pudu, was found deceased in the habitat before the Zoo opened. This prompted us to examine Riley, Gizmo, and the newest baby. After an examination by Veterinary and Animal Care staff, all three pudus appeared to be in good health. However, prey species often mask illness, and some diseases progress quickly. On Wednesday morning, the newest baby pudu also passed away.

We suspect a bacterial or viral illness, to which juvenile and newborn pudus are more vulnerable. We are awaiting further test results to determine the exact cause of their passing. Animal Care and Veterinary Hospital staff have been closely monitoring parents Riley and Gizmo. As of now, they appear healthy.

This is hard news for our entire Zoo family, as we had just celebrated the birth of our newest pudu baby, whom you all have quickly fallen in love with, both virtually and in-person. We have the honor of caring for these animals every day, but with that responsibility comes the burden of
loss.

Thank you all for your support for our staff and volunteers during this difficult time.

Last week we celebrated TWO very special birthdays on Siamang Island! ๐Ÿ’š

Sid turned 10, and Raya is now 3! ๐ŸŽ‚๐ŸŽˆ

This dynamic duo has had quite the year! After a long introduction process and building trust step by step, it is safe to say theyโ€™ve blossomed into the sweetest friends! ๐Ÿ’• It is a joy to hear them singing and see them swinging together every day.

To celebrate, their keepers went all out with an array of decorated gift boxes and creative twists on their daily enrichment to make the day extra special. ๐ŸŽโœจ

And the clear birthday favorite? Frozen sweet potato & banana cakes ๐Ÿ ๐ŸŒ (the video says it all ๐Ÿ˜‹).

Happy Birthday, Sid & Raya! ๐ŸŽ‰

CUBDATE: Clover has come a long way since her rescue in March. Look at the difference a few months have made!

As you know, Clover and our other mountain lion rescue, Crimson, have been recovering separately at our Veterinary Hospital. Now that Clover has grown larger and is adapting well to a new setting, itโ€™s time for her to take the next step in her journey!

Though we would have loved for Crimson and Clover to meet and grow up together, we have an obligation to protect Cloverโ€™s welfare and wellbeing and cannot hold back her recovery. Because she has grown significantly compared to Crimson and is much further along in her recovery, we have decided not to introduce them and to work with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to find her a new home.

Clover is at the ideal age to be introduced to a companion, and it is our priority to work with CDFW to find her a home where she can be paired with another mountain lion rather than remain alone at this critical step in her journey. Crimson will stay at the Zoo until he achieves all the key milestones necessary before moving to his new home. Until then, we will keep you up to date on next steps for both cubs!
