Turn that beak upside down (and that volume up for flamingo chatter)! 🦩

Ever wondered how flamingos eat?

These iconic pink birds feed upside down, using their uniquely shaped beaks like built‑in strainers. By swinging the head back and forth and letting the muddy water flow through the bill, they filter out the yummy stuff, which to them is tiny shrimp, plankton, and algae!

Happy to these masterful filter feeders 💗

A little jab will do ya 🦓💙

Beetlejuice zebra was due for some vaccinations, so vet tech Linden and Keeper Aeriell teamed up for the task!

Our Animal Care staff work closely with animals like Beetlejuice to build trust, so they voluntarily participate in veterinary treatments like this quick fenceline visit.

One poke later and Beetlejuice is protected from encephalitis, West Nile virus, and tetanus.

Nice work everyone!

Alberto and Ash are berry interested in today's enrichment 🫐

These super-small monkeys are critically endangered -- Cotton-top tamarins are exclusively found in the lowland forests of Colombia, which have been reduced to just 5% of their original size.

An Oakland resident saved this young heron's life! ⭐

During fledging season (from March to August), young herons can fall from their nests. If they’re too young to fly, they’re left grounded and highly vulnerable.

This black‑crowned night heron fledgling is safe because a local noticed it alone and grounded, so they called our Heron Rescue Team.

‼️To report a fallen or injured black-crowned night heron in Oakland, call our rescue hotline (510) 703-8986‼️

👉 Not sure if you should make the call? You can get more information about how to help at our website under 'Found or Injured Wildlife Guide'

Our team, amazing volunteers, and partners are ready to respond, but your call can make all the difference. ❤️

And stay tuned next week for a behind‑the‑scenes look at what rehabilitation looks like for these birds with our partner, International Bird Rescue.
