The start of a new school year means it's time to wrap up our Food Sovereignty Youth Leadership Summer Internship. Over the past six weeks, our Interns have delved deeply into topics such as the food system, herbalism, food sovereignty, environmental justice, and land stewardship. Through their participation week after week they grew their relationship to food, land, community and each other.🪴 🌎

We are so proud of all they have accomplished, from receiving their food handlers certificate to making fresh jam from scratch, and can't wait to see the seeds they planted grow in the seasons ahead! 🌱 🎉

We are deeply saddened by the news of the sudden passing of Rasheed Stanley-Lockheart.

He was the brightest star. He came to Planting Justice the first day he got home after 18 yrs of incarceration, and he taught us what one can and should do with their freedom…how to cultivate and share your love and gratitude for each moment and how to channel that into building relationships across all differences towards a clear and spirit-centered goal…freedom for all!

Rasheed quickly rose at PJ to become our very first Reentry Coordinator. He welcomed Sol (our current Reentry Coordinator) home, and welcomed so many others, showing everyone he met what believing in yourself could do. We were all sad, but so proud, when he left PJ to accept an incredible opportunity as a Director at Ahimsa Collective, where he continued to lead in the movement to create human and spirit centered models for welcoming people home from incarceration.

His love and spirit will continue to infuse all of our work, sites, and projects at PJ. He will continue to teach us that life, so short as it is, and freedom, so tenuous as it is, should be used as best we can to spread gratitude and kindness, and to use our energy to uplift everyone around us. We love you Rasheed and are so grateful for your life, your freedom, and how you lived it.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. May his memory be a blessing and a revolution.

Did you know some of today's most powerful medications trace their roots back to plants? 🌱

Week 2 of our Food Sovereignty Youth Leadership Summer Internship was all about Herbalism and the ways plants can be used as medicine. Plants and plant extracts have been used as medicines for thousands of years, far predating any written human history. Plants, unlike animals, are not able to get up and run away when faced with danger; instead, they defend themselves by creating a series of chemicals known as 'secondary metabolites.' 🪻🧑‍🔬 These metabolites are the foundation to many of the medicines we use today. This week our Interns are accessing this natural library of chemicals through oxymel and tea making, unearthing another gift from the earth. 🌎

What do you know about oak trees in Oakland? 🌳

Planting Justice's Food Sovereignty Youth Leadership Summer Internship is in full swing, rooting young leaders in the rich legacy of the land that sustains us. 🌱 The city of Oakland, once a thriving oak ecosystem, was abundant with coast live oaks whose acorns were a sacred and vital food source for the Ohlone people, as well as sustenance for the squirrels, birds, deer, and grizzly bears that roamed the area. Acorns have long symbolized nourishment, resilience, and a deep relationship with the land. Today, our interns are honoring that legacy and deepening their connection to both the earth and each other by making acorn flour tortillas! (Re)connecting with and sharing ancestral knowledge with hands-on learning and shared meals. 💚 🍽️
Thank you to our own Andrea Loyola for leading this activity and sharing her knowledge with us.

Restorative Justice Reentry Conference and Expo!

Sol, Reentry Coordinator at Planting Justice and all-around amazing human, will be speaking on a panel exploring “the often-overlooked realities faced by women impacted by incarceration.

“Rooted in a system where punishment and control dominate, prison culture can perpetuate abuse, including sexual violence, intimidation, and harassment—harms that were never part of anyone’s sentence. As one woman powerfully stated, “Even though we broke the law, r**e, intimidation, and sexual harassment were not part of our sentence.” Panelists will share personal stories that illuminate the deep trauma experienced behind bars and the ongoing challenges faced upon reentry. At the same time, they will speak to their strength, resistance, and healing—offering a powerful call for alternatives to incarceration that prioritize accountability, dignity, and true rehabilitation. This conversation invites us to reimagine justice through the voices of those who have lived it.”

Planting Justice Mother Farm
Saturday, July 19, 2025
10:30 am - 12 noon

Join the Planting Justice Mother Farm team at our 4-acre orchard and food forest in El Sobrante, CA on July 19 for a farm tour and tasting of our early summer fruit!

The event is limited to 35 people, and is on a sliding scale to assist access and opportunity to support our work.

We’ll start at 10:30am with a short tour of the PJ Mother Farm – a unique urban farm with views of Mt. Tam – and then enjoy the many varieties of mulberry, peach, plum, apricot, and cherry (as available) growing on the farm, as well as baked good featuring our fruit, AND we’ll also have farm jams (and possibly even some farm honey) available for sale! 🍋 🍑 🍒

The 6-member PJ Mother Farm team nurtures two trees / bushes of each variety to grow scion and cutting wood for propagation at our East Oakland Nursery, so we’re able to grow over 1,000 varieties of fruit on limited land. The fruit from our pairs is a bonus to share with our community and distribute to neighbors in need.

Scan the QR Code or check the Calendar section of our 🔗 LinkTree🌳 to register. See you there!

Volunteers needed at the East Oakland Nursery to help set up our new tables and reorganize all our plant buddies.🌱

Over winter we installed a french drain system (no more swamp!) and shade structure over the main area in the nursery, and now that it's finished, it's time to set up the new tables and move all the plants back to their proper places.

It's a big job, and we need your help!

Sign up for a slot (or two or three 😘 ) on the following dates & join us to set up the East Oakland Nursery for success!
